original engine question

trying to figure out if the 350 in my '71 C20 is the original or a replacement. Not sure where to look on the motor. There is a number on the front of the block by the pass. head. Here it is: VO414TBC

Is there another number I will need to find to determine if it is the original motor? I just went through 2 cans of degreaser and 20 minutes of pressure washing to make sure it wasn't a 6 cylinder under all that crud!

Re: original engine question

Go to www.mortec.com They have diagrams that show number locations and help you decoded some of the hibbity dibbity. I also called my local Chevy dealer for some info, they were very helpful.

If ,That number is stamped on the top of the block that what is used to confirm the engine belongs in there with your Vin number.

Re: original engine question

Anybody want to try another block stamping? Rear of block is 3970010, front of block looks like VO419TDG. I couldnt find the front number on mortec. Just the rear number. Was supposed to have been removed from a 72 K5.

Thanks
Jason

Re: original engine question

First off I don't know where you find the info you are seeking without you having the original invoice, but the VO number is more or less the serial number not the 010 block number. The VO.... # would be on the build sheet and once that truck went out of warranty GM probably tossed them would be my guess.
