Barn find resurrection
Yesterday I started on my new project of bringing back to life a 1970 short step 2 wheel drive. Removed the box, then removed the engine. I found why it was in the barn. Can any one tell me what these heads are by the numbers in the pictures?

Re: Barn find resurrection
It was in this pickup when I bought it . ## show it came with a six, so I'm un sure what it is. I was thinking of using the heads on up to the carb on another block that I have. Depends what I have.

Re: Barn find resurrection
The 882's are definitely a 350/400 head from the smog era (1974-80) and don't get too much love as a performance head. I'd use them on a cruiser if you didn't have to put any $ into them.

Re: Barn find resurrection
They get none from me...that casting is very prone to cracking. Now the block...that's a good one...hang on to it!

Re: Barn find resurrection
I would hang onto the block if I could. It was what I had at the time and this project needed it. Who ever ends up with this pickup will have a good 4 bolt block that they can install better heads if they want.

Re: Barn find resurrection
Its a good thing the motor had problems, it helped keep the truck in real good shape.

Thanks for the ID help guys. It came with another block and heads. I'll tear it down this weekend to see what it's made of.

Re: Barn find resurrection
It looks like you only like 72's so I'll come by this weekend and pick that old junk truck up from you.
Looks like a sweet project!

Re: Barn find resurrection
The 882 heads have reputation of cracking between the valve seats. Instead of putting any money back into the heads you might want to find some replacements. The 993 casting is a better bet for durability but some 441 or 487 castings would give you better flow/performance.
Have fun with your new project. It does not look like it needs too much to be back on the road. |

Re: Barn find resurrection
don't knock 882 heads. have used them alot in the past making some great horsepower. granted they are not the same as newer cheaper heads they are still good. slap some screwin studs and new valves and some domed topped 10.5 pistons and with the reight springs you will have a 7200 rpm. the 76cc heads are for the smog cars but can be built to be a very low buck continder. just my 2 cents.

Re: Barn find resurrection
That one shows to be a 77-79 350 2 or 4 bolt block.

I'll have to pull it apart to check it out and clean it up after work tonight. Hope it's a 4 bolt.

Re: Barn find resurrection
I was searching for another engine option today and came across a 350 runner that he said came out of a early 70's pickup. I gave $100 for it. What do these ## tell it is??
