70-72 vs 73-87 balljoints, whats the diff?

When they changed them, did they make them any stronger? Aside from taper, diameter, ect ect, what did they change? Is there any great reason to swap over to the newer style balljoints/outter tie rod ends? Reason I ask is because Ive got a complete crossmember/a-arms/brake setup from a 73-87, but have a set of McGaughys drop spindles for a 70-72 truck that I had bought before I had a real plan for the truck. If theres no real reason to swap to the newer spindles Ill stick with what Ive got.
