72 Longbed Drive Shaft - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I just removed the drive shaft from my truck to replace the carrier support and bearing. I removed the back half of the shaft . do I need a bearing puller to remove the old bearing and cut the ruber remains from the old support?
I am open to you suggestions. I dont remember using a bearing puller or any special tooling when I had my 58' Belair 2 peice shaft. Am I losing my mind.

i have a SWB with a 2 piece driveshaft and when you buy a replacement bearing it has the whole thing complete. it will come with the bearing, the rubber, and a new metal cradle. just make sure to slap some grease on it before you put the rear shaft on

First you need to remove the bolt thats holding the yoke on and once the bolts off just have a parts store press the yoke and bearing off and press the new bearing on and the yoke. Just make shure you mark the yoke so it goes back on the same way. www.iedls.com has a heavy duty centerbearing made from one solid hunk of aluminum. They also recommend putting a slip yoke on the end that conect to the rearend. When your suspention goes up and down the drive shaft moves forward and back which puts pressure on the center bearing with the slip yoke there is no pressure on that bearing. I know because my truck has been siting in my driveway with the same problem and no money to fix so im driven brother inlaws truck

This Shaft has a slip yoke for the rear half. I thoutht the bearing would just slip off when I took off the back half.

The expense for the bearing and carrier was only $32.00 at NAPA . and about 20 minutes to remove the driveline. I just need to get the old bearing off to make way for the new assembly. Just thought there might be an easy trick that I diddn't know about.

If available, have napa or any good auto parts store do the bearing install, infact, have all the universal joints and the center bearing replaced at the same time. usually they charge so little that it is WELL worth the investment----then you can forget about it for 100K miles!
