painting a holley

Ok, so I am getting ready to detail the motor, once it comes back.

Any ideas on how to make a new holley look pretty?

Paint or Powder coat?

How do you do it without bunging it up?

Check the Holley http://www.holley.com website. They offer custom services to add lots of bling to your carb....

Re: painting a holley

I have powder coated a couple. I won't do it for customers because of the possibility that 400 degrees will warp the throttle body. That hasn't been a problem for me but I have seen it cause problems on transmission cases.

Would you do mine? I'd forgive you if it warped

Holley says they will only do a new one, of their shelf.

Advance Auto Parts right? Do you have a brand name of the paint? I have a Holley (that is expendable) that I would like to try it on along with brake calipers and master cylinder.

Hmn, I am somewhat short on old carbs. I have the qjet and intake that came off of my BBC, but I am not spending the time to clean that sucker up!

Re: painting a holley

yeah its at advance auto. I think the name is dupli-color caliper paint.
I used it on my 01 Trans Am ws6,1 can did four calipers. It's held up really well, only thing is, dont use the brush thats supplied with the kit. it sucks and comes apart, go ahead and buy a good hobby brush. I painted mine over a year ago and they still look pretty good except for when I cleaned them with purple power it took some of the color out but its not real noticeable, good luck.

Re: painting a holley

I have tried the stuff from Eastwood. it gets all gummy from the fuel. I would go woth powder coating & then machine the surfaces true. (youd be suprised how many Holleys are warped when new)

Re: painting a holley

I agree with powder coating. I've seen several Holleys with un true surfaces, why do you think they use such thick gaskets??

Before you send it off, take the time to knock off the casting edges and smooth it out.

OR

Dump it and buy a Barry Grant, like the kind I have sittin on that manifold in der garage... It looks prettyyyyy.... really really PRETTY!!! THey are smooth and shiney and pretty, unlike edelbrocks and holleys that are rough and shiney.

So Tony, why don't you sell me that Barry Grant that you'll never use?

I'll probably never use it on a 460, but it might see life again on the 5.3 Besides, this isnt a show quality piece anymore. The PO let it sit in a damp area so there was some corrosion that still shows.

Heh, you know whats funny? Ive been asking for a picture of what 26 pairs of NOS D60/14b combos look like for the longest time now, you cant seem to ever find your camera after you find it again....:flipoff2:

[edit] Even as screwed up as this carb looks, it still looks 5 times better than a holley ever will brand new out of the box.

Yah, but mine are all in wooden boxes... sitting in Boston, 36 miles away from me. You wanted a pile pic, ain't going to happen. Now ask me for a pic of something in my garage and I'll go snap one.

When you shipping me that carb? I can clean it up nicely...

Arrow Re: painting a holley

My experiences with Holleys is that they are very heat sensitive, beware of improper finishing of the body, and the bowls on these.
In my resto experiences, recoloring the parts is the best way, and having the shafts inspected for wear issues in that case they may need to be bushed.
I think in most populus cities there are proper plating services to correctly do this for you.
