Rear Step Bumper Dilemma
I need some opinions on my latest 71 K20 Cheyenne restoration.
It has the orginal perfect shape aluminum painted step bumper on it which I wanted to chrome and reuse. I've been to all three chrome shops around here and they all agree that the bumper can not be chromed due to the design. I would not get coverage all over it. So do I paint it aluminum like it was or buy a new chrome aftermarket? I know the aluminum paint was original but I figure most peope are going to think that looks pretty generic on my truck. Anyone have aftermarket rear bumper recommendations? Pics? Maybe I can even use the non-step bumper with my hitch? Thanks, |

How about powdercoating it? I have seen some that have an almost chrome to shiny aluminum look. Could be done for about 100 - 200.

I vote for primered69's idea, powercoating would be your best bet

Is this for the beautiful green and white 4x4? My vote is definately for the original bumper painted or powdercoated.

IMO the aftermarket step and tow chrome ones look crappy. I've got 3 burbs (1 4x4, 2 2wd), all with class 3 hitches and the "sport" bumper with no clearance issues so I vote for that combo.

With a truck that nice I wouldn't put no cheap looking aftermarket bymper on it. I vote to keep it original and paint or powdercoat it!

WoW! Your truck is beautiful! Dang that looks nice.
Powdercoating is a great option. Also, Ceramic coating might be possible. It's not as shiny as chrome, but it looks like polished aluminum. Not sure about the durability.

We use powdercoating on some of our stuff here at work and they brought in some color swatches and some of their silvers were very brilliant almost like chrome. Go with the powder coating...IMHO

Sounds like I need to check into powdercoating options. I'd really like to keep this thing since it is in perfect shape.

lots of opinions
Now mine.
Powdercoating would be great way to go. Aren't all step bumpers aftermarket (dealer or later installed) I have had and seen some pretty nice chrome step bumpers available that IMHO would look great. Whether you use step or sport bumper a class 3 hitch is nice addition. Step bumpers on pickups are real useable to step into bed without dropping tailgate. On 3/4 4x4 like yours the tailgate height is pretty tall for 1 step-up. Hopefully I'm attaching a picture of one I had that fit well. (picture shows it dirty)

I learned something
I never really paid much attention to glove box sticker as far as bumpers go (too busy looking for rare options!!). If yours is listed and is straight sounds like you need to talk with a powdercoater!!
CPNE would say "stock and like a rock"!!

Drop Center
Here is a drop center...it's another option. Note the piece in the hitch plug...it's a third brake light & it flips down for a step.
Hey, look at the front of that nice green 4X4---it's a "Hooker". Last edited by PICKMUP; 02-13-2004 at 12:12 AM. |

Hey Dean. If you are looking for a sweet factory stepbumper i have one. It came off a leafspring truck. Which was from California. It is currently installed on my 68. Very Chromable. Very heavy duty. PM me or call me 937-653-3891 I can email pics of it.

I have a factory step bumper. They can not however be chromed due to the design of the bumper. At least that is what the three different chrome shops told me. I'm looking into the powder coating now.

Hey Pickmup, whats the doodad sticking up on the back corner of your flatbed? I've seen pictures of your very nice truck before and could never work out what that was.

Lippyp--suspect that's a swivel mount for a hydraulic lift or crane.
