idle solenoid

my truck has been running strange lately. sometimes i start it up and it runs fine. other times, i start it up and it stalls after about 10-15 seconds. i think it is the idle solenoid. when it stalls, i adjust it so the idle solenloid so it is faster and wont stall, and then when i put it into gear, it runs really really high. then after i turn it off and start it back up, it either goes back to normal idle or wont start up or stalls again. should i just buy a new one, or does this need adjusting (if so, how do i do this?).
