Is a vortec 6.0 in a 2004 escalade an LQ9?

I'll get pics up later but Im trying to find out what motor this is as I might want to switch it over to my GMC. Anyone know what trans might be in it? Its an ESV with all wheel drive long wheel base(133" I think).

Re: Is a vortec 6.0 in a 2004 escalade an LQ9?

It might be the LQ9 in an escalade and it probably has the 4l80e tranny. Any of the 6.0 motors are great. However, the LQ9 does offer a little higher compression over the LQ4. The only way to tell is run the VIN or remove the heads and look at the pistons.

If it's original to the Escalade then it is an LQ9, it will not have a 4l80e it will be either a 4l60e or 4l65e. They only put the 80's behind LQ4's and they ars only in 3/4 ton and up trucks.

If you put up a pic of the pan I can tell you if it's a a 4l80 e or not, but there's no difference in appearance between a 60 and 65.

Just because it is in an escalade doesnt make it an lq9. The only true way to tell is to run the vin or check the pistons.

The first one is engine pan. Youre gonna laugh at these but its so low to the ground and not much room or light, this is the best I could do. These pics are pathetic but theres no room, I can barely even slide under it.

Thanks for the help. Yes, its a great motor. I just recently hauled 8 tons with it(including itself), and it performed beautifully at all times. Put the hammer down and she gets right up the hills, no prob!

Can't tell by those pics but all the 80's I've worked on have a drain plug in them. Does yours? Also that 5.3 written in grease pencil looks like a salvage yard marking, has it been replaced?

Thanks, BACKYARD. ls1nova71, what do you think the 5.3 marking means? Switched motors?

Could be a date, or for 5.3 liter.

Doesn't the LS9 have an aluminium block?

Re: Is a vortec 6.0 in a 2004 escalade an LQ9?

It probably WAS replaced. The title even says "rebuilt vehicle", we did a vehicle history search a while back and it showed that the vehicle had been stolen in the past also. My dad bought it a few years ago and left it to me when he died. Ok, heres the last eight of the vin...4G316351. Thanks for the help fellas.

USUALLY slavage yards mark the case on the hard parts. That little cover would be awfully easy to change or loose. I would guess that was put there possibly by a lube shop so they would know in the pit what filters to use.

Re: Is a vortec 6.0 in a 2004 escalade an LQ9?

Hard to say what the 5.3 means, could have just had the transmission changed with one that was originally behind a 5.3, but that's just a guess. You can take a.spark plug.out and with a flashlight and a mirror look at the top of the piston to see if its flat or not if you're still in doubt if it's a LQ9 or LQ4. If you suspect the engine has been replaced with a 5.3 you could take the alternator bracket off and look behind it for a cast in 6.0 or 5.3/4.8. Also the original head gaskets have a little tab that sticks out of the side that would say 6.0 on it. But I would suspect that it still has the original engine in itif it was a rebuilt vehicle, it probably wasn't all that badly messed up when stolen, but the insurance company probably just wrote it off as a total loss to make things easy.

Vintage Windmills, an LS9 is an aluminum block, but I think you were thinking LQ9? In which case, no, they are a cast iron truck block.

Re: Is a vortec 6.0 in a 2004 escalade an LQ9?

Assuming you had to smog the truck when you purchased it, what was the engine size indicated on the vehicle inspection report ? If the emissions label is present on the air filter box or underhood somewhere compare the vacuum hose routing as best as you can to see if it matches. The engine size should show on there as well... Hope this helps
