New member introduction with pics and some questions

Hello Forum,

I have been perusing now for quite some time. Really like the community here and am sure that I will be making use of the parts thread soon...

Anyways, Im here in Arkansas and my Dad just bought me a 1972 gmc.

My wife and I needed a second car and I am so excited to have something tinker with... I used to be a vw man but it seems Ive turned American.

The trim and the bumpers i got off craigslist from a nice gentleman down the road. He gave them to me off his 1969 chevy. Will these fit? I plan on cleaning up the side moulding and hammer out the bumper. I dont think Ill be able to re-chrome it but I think it will be alright.

Anyways, couple of questions. I have read on here that the best way to clean these mouldings is oven cleaner? Is that right? Is there a good way to repaint them to black instead of the wood tape?

What do you guys think I should do? I think its worth the trouble to try and salvage these mouldings and bumpers...but then again I dont know

Thanks all!

Re: New member introduction with pics and some questions

First off, welcome. Nice truck. It has a very clean look to it.

IMHO, where your truck didn't come with moulding, and it doesn't have all the holes and ugly mounting clips spinning like a helicopter, I would personally leave it. Guys spend a lot of money filling those holes and repainting, so for yours to not have it is somewhat unique, and I'd just run it proudly as it was intended.

That being said, it's your truck and obviously your choice. You can clean the trim up with Eagle one Neverdull. You can also repaint the black areas. With the bumper, you can definitely shine it up. Check out my previous posts, for a thread I started on this yesterday with a how to

Yeah, it does have the GMC grill, with black paint.

I did pick up that tail gate banner from the gentleman today, good eyes

I figure my line of action should be:

Stop Rust
Clean and wax
Lower
Enjoy

Oh, and what does it say on the side of it?

Re: New member introduction with pics and some questions

Thanks!

Maybe you are right about the trim...It is pretty clean. I guess I am just so excited. I havent gotten it yet. He is working on it getting it in tip top shape...probably going to hammer out the dents in it too. Therefore I am still in the agony of waiting to see/drive it as we live 3 hrs away from eachother.

Sorry I havent got more pictures.

Re: New member introduction with pics and some questions

Hello and welcome!

Yes yellow cap Easy Off oven cleaner will take the clear coat anodizing right off that old trim. I am in the process of refinishing some oem trim right now. Clean the parts with soap and water then spray on some Easy off. A nice liberal coating and be sure to get all the edges. Wait two minutes and scrub them with a green 3M kitchen pad. Be sure to scrub only in one direction and it will leave you with a decent satin finish from the scrubbing marks. Then mask them off and paint them satin black. BE SURE TO WEAR PROPER HEAVY GLOVES as the Easy Off contains Lye and will burn you badly.

Re: New member introduction with pics and some questions

I'm gonna change my opinion here. I just saw a before and after shot of a clean truck, vs one with the moulding installed. The moulding truck looked better IMHO

Re: New member introduction with pics and some questions

yeah DBSTEPSIDE thats a dodge d100 in the background.

As far as the moulding is concerned...its going to take a lot of work to look new but im going to try. I will need to hammer out the steel to get it all looking uniform and straight.

I agree...I think the moulding makes the truck look better and would complement the conservative lowering that I want to do this this thing. I will take the atenna off...probably patch the hole as best I can...idk.

From what Ive been told the engine has been changed so stay tuned lol...

Nice truck - I like the color and the interior. It's gonna look sharp with a mild drop. I'm just north of you in Sherwood. I'm sure I'll probably see you cruising that truck around Little Rock!
