Power steering gearbox 2wd vs 4wd and difference??

My gearbox took a crap on me and I was wondering if there were any difference other than the pittman arm? My local salvage has plenty of 2wd box's but no 4wd's.

Im not sure if the pitman arm can be clocked or not but the 2wd swings side to side and the 4wd swings front to back.. You can however use the 2wd box and performa crossover steering set-up...

I've heard of crossover, what all is involved in that setup?

Re: Power steering gearbox 2wd vs 4wd and difference??

Boxes and pitman arms are different between 2wd and 4wd. On the 4x4 box and arm they are splined on about 1/4 of the surface vs. being fully splined all the way around on the 2wd units.
If you want to learn about crossover steering I'd suggest a google search along the lines of "chevy crossover steering". ORD has some good info and products for instance.

Here is a kit for $45 for Autozone. My gear box is leaky to and am thinking of rebuilding it before it craps out. New gear boxes are crazy expensive. A used one is a gamble.

I have also heard (but never verified) that 4wd boxes are a reverse rotation due to the location of the pitman arm.

Re: Power steering gearbox 2wd vs 4wd and difference??

The pitman shaft on a 2 wheel drice steering gear is both tapered and splined all of the way around, with spline seperation on them so that the pitman arm will only go on one way. The pitman shaft is also threaded on the end for a bolt that holds the pitman arm in place.

The 4 wheel drive steering gear has a pitman shaft that is not tapered. However it does have a short spline section, and a groove cut in it to alow for the bolt to pas thru tightening the pitman arm.
They are not interchangeable. WES
