Re: 283 & 327 for one low price!
What would stock exhaust manifold look like? Straight down? Angled? I've seen some that connect and exit in the rear
Many different manifolds I get it Looking just to get cheap good manifolds to get it on the road I'm in belief that the manifold for a 283 will work and are probably the same as the 327 I'm guessing seal kits/rering/engine kits are the same as well Feels like I'm going to end up buying doubles of everything and I'm cool with that |

Re: 283 & 327 for one low price!
Not as far as I know your best bet is to buy the ram horns . Put the whole package into the truck then take it to a exhaust shop a d have them route the pipes how they see best . I personally like and prefer long tube headers myself ... they sound nicer and performance is better but that's just me

Re: 283 & 327 for one low price!
I believe the 65 327 is the small journal and most of them if not all came with steel cranks as well. They too can be built to take it. I believe the large journal 327 came in 67.

Re: 283 & 327 for one low price!
I would definitely build the 327 over the 283. That 327 with the 461/462 casting heads and the 4-Jet carb was likely an original 300 hp 327. The suffix code in front of the passenger side head will tell you. Hopefully the inside of the 327 looks better than the outside.

Re: 283 & 327 for one low price!
Thanks Jim I thought it was around 67 or so. Thanks for the clarification. In any case, as mentioned both could make nice little small blocks but that 327 could really be a beast if built with good stuff. It sounds like the OP has a plan for that down the road. Good luck with both my friend.

Re: 283 & 327 for one low price!
your 283 has powerpac heads on it.
the 327 looks like it has fuelie heads on it , it's a 62-67 its a small journal crank 327 , that's a great engine to build. both engines use the same size bearings. the 283 has smaller bore pistons. I think its 3+7/8 the 327 has 4 inch bore . that small journal 327 was a great find !! don't let anyone try to con you out of it . Last edited by 60chevyjim; 02-19-2016 at 12:11 AM. |

Re: 283 & 327 for one low price!
I have never seen a 300hp 327 with a 4-jet Rochester, only a carter AFB. when i was a kid we had a new 63 Impala with a 250hp eng and it had a 4-jet and non fuelie heads. the best SB ever built back in the day.

Re: 283 & 327 for one low price!
this would be a better deal than the exaust manifolds
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151333159004...84.m1436.l2649 and if you need a new alternator I bought one like this .. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-CHROME-O...ZRm~pT&vxp=mtr Last edited by 60chevyjim; 02-19-2016 at 08:22 PM. |

Re: 283 & 327 for one low price!
Wow, there must be a lot of humidity in the air for them to corrode like that.
But you're inspiring me to maybe look for one of them to put in my truck. Had a Ford 272 Y block back in the day but can't say I've ever had the experience of running a 283 or 327. My dad was afraid of V-8's so he bought his 55 Chevy wagon with the 261. |

Re: 283 & 327 for one low price!
the oil filter 's are canister oil filters , they have a filter inside that you can replace ,
there is a Oring where the canister meets the block. you can buy an adaptor to use a much cheaper spin on filter . yes the orange 327 valve covers for 62-67 . the exhaust gaskets are the same on older stock motors. I posted a link for stainless steel headers that will fit your truck and they wont rust .. also a one wire alternator that makes hookup way too ez northern auto has good prices on rebuild kits . once you get the heads off both motors 283 + 327 you can see witch engine will be in better shape to rebuild . if they need bored + new pistons . don't waste your money on the 283 the 327 is a better investment of you money. I have about five or six stock 283's and one small journal 327 with lots of performance parts . my chopped 50 ferd is all chevy too , 350 engine th350 trans and S10 front clip and rear and S10 wiring harness so no need to have to walk home.
