measuring drive shaft length
What's the correct way to measure for a new drive shaft? I have installed the 283 & 700r4 in my 63 and now need to have a drive shaft made.
Thanks |

Re: measuring drive shaft length
Dont forget to back the yoke out 3/4-1" out of the transmission before you measure to allow for suspension travel-otherwise it will eat up your seal.

Re: measuring drive shaft length
When I put a 700r4 in my 64 I just measured the 350 turbo and the 700r4 and had my driveshaft shortened the difference. I fiqured the driveshaft worked on the 350 so cut down to fit the 700 it still should work.

Re: measuring drive shaft length
Measure from the flat suface of the rear yoke that (middle of u-joint) to the transmission tailshaft and subtractg 3/4". Everybody else nailed it though.

Re: measuring drive shaft length
you could measure it a dozen different ways, but the bottom line is leave about 3/4 inch exposed at the tailstock as summerj suggests above for suspension movement of the rear end. If you get it too close, something, probably the trans will break. A truck service company did mine, balanced it and never had a problem driving it as a daily driver. Don't forget to address the electronic torque converter lockup and TV cable issues with the 700r4 or it won't last long.
