what could it be

ok so i unhooked the speedometer cable from my transfer case hooked it up to a drill and it all worked fine but when i hook the cable back up to the transfer case it doesn't work at all

did you pull put the speedo gear in the tcase and look at it?

im not 100% sure on the tcase but that should be the same as for the trany tail shaft.

they are different colors for different number of ratios

well i pulled out a black piece of plastic its like a plastic dowel with a spiral cut into it...is this it and how can i tell if this thing is broke...thanks so much for the help by the way

If it looks like a dowel then something is broke. It should have a gear on the end of it. The color of it is how you tell which gear you will need (I think).

Whoever you talked to really shouldn't be working at a parts store.

The color of the gear denotes how many teeth it has. Different # for different ratios, you can also change the gear to adjust for tire size changes. I know there is a calculator for this somewhere, unfortunately, that's a link I forgot to save....

well i called advance and i told them i need a speedometer gear and told him what it looked like and he said"uuuuuuh we got a speedometer cable" lol does any one know maby the part number for a black speedometer gear from a th350 i think 40teeth

Here is a link to the place I got my new speedo gear from when I went from a 2.73 to a 3.42. Got the part in like 3 days. I bought it from them via Ebay and it cost $9 shipped. Hope this helps.

poke, call Corthern-Varnadore and tell them you need a black speedo gear. They'll know what you're talking about. It's $10 at the most.
