Anybody ever paint a set of Cragar S/S's

I got a really god deal on a set of Cragar SS wheels with tires for my '71 last weekend. The only drawback is that they have the typical little chrome bubbles on a couple of them and the chrome rim on one has a nice rust ring around it.

They'll clean up good enough to look good from a distance, but I was thinking about painting them with some charcoal grey or cast aluminum paint.
I hate fake chrome paint, so that's not an option. I would just like to dress them up a little pit.

Cragar is actually selling them with a cast center and black center now, so this could just look like another variation.

If anybody has done this, I would be intersted in seeing them.

This might be an out of the box idea but ... how about powder coating them either gloss black or a gray?

See if someone can photoshop a wheel in your likings and post up a pic?

Try a $6 can of Rust-o-leum Hammered in your choice of color. After your clean the flaked chrome. I used it on my ralleys.

Re: Anybody ever paint a set of Cragar S/S's

Yes, and they don't look so hot up close.

Maybe from 30 or 40 feet they look ok. But then again, i wasn't really concerned about looks----i just wanted to be able run an 11.5 wide slick at the time; They are 15X10.

i will try to get a picture up by tomorrow.

Re: Anybody ever paint a set of Cragar S/S's

Before I painted my chrome rallyes due to some flaking and rust issues, I used a product called Neva Dull from Kragen/O'Riley auto parts. The chrome came up nice but in the end I painted it anyway.

Re: Anybody ever paint a set of Cragar S/S's

Sorry it took me so long to post the picture; i'm a challenged individual---mentally, physically, socially and otherwise.

Anyways:

Maybe they don't look as bad as i thought. i used, i think, crylon or rustoleum silver.

Again, i wasn't concerned about looks; i just bought them because they had some nice 11.5 slicks mounted on them which i wanted at the time.

As a suggestion, i think rustoleum has a new "hand hammered finish" spray which i used last summer painting a fence and it really looked good. You might look into that.

Oh yes, i see weasle29 mentioned that.

Re: Anybody ever paint a set of Cragar S/S's

Um...yeah---these are the after pics; They really didn't look so hot before, and i'm not the type that really cares about looks that much---function over form. i'm not the type that's into the thousands$$$ paint jobs, chrome etc. Which tells you how bad these wheels were for me to paint them.

Anyways, i think you, cutlassman, could could make a set look good with some effort. i had a flash yesterday----i was thinking that a set painted yellow might look good; Picture like a yellow 442(or truck) with a set of yellow S/S's on them---i think it might work.

Or maybe black and yellow----the spokes yellow and the rim black. Or vice-versa. It might work.

Re: Anybody ever paint a set of Cragar S/S's

The other thing that stuck me is yellow body, red wheels. i think that would work, be cool, and be different. Or red body, yellow wheels.

The reason why i'm on a 442 kick is because i saw a picture of a yellow one, but it, yellow/red theme, could probably work for trucks also. Leave the centre caps chrome though.

Re: Anybody ever paint a set of Cragar S/S's

Those didn't happen to have a set of old hoosier slicks on them did they? Those look exactly like some I sold at a northern Missouri swap meet a year or so ago.
