Cleaning up loose ends on swap from 4spd to auto. I have searched all posts and not found answer. I installed auto column into 4spd truck. Now I need to hookup backup lights and neutral safety switch. What all is involved?

I also need the plug or cover to go over the clutch rod hole in the firewall.

Any help?

Well your reverse switch is on the tranny on your 4spd ... should be a plug type adapter is its still there...hmm,... I suppose you could run a set of jumper wires to the automatic columns set of wires under the dash... the automatic harness and the 4 spd harness have different location for the reverse wiring. So wires from under the dash... you see the reverse wires there... they were next to the neutral safety wiring... both plugged into the automtics neutral safety.... you might have to run wires back out the firewall and down to the tranny switch. I did have someone do the swap and I haven't crawled under there this morning yet to look. So I should have plug that went to my 4spd reverse switch still in place and I could reconfigure that to fit reverse switch next to neutral safety switch on lower end of column. If this is true then how do I setup the neutral safety switch to avoid starts in gear?

I cant remeber if the trucks even came with neutral safety switches for 4 spd... I dont think they did.
I suppose you could hook one up to the clutch pedal from a newer truck that may of had the neutral safety. Connect a set of jumper wires to the neural safety connection that is there from the automatic.

Hey bob the wiring diagram I have shows a purple wire going from the firewall connector to the ignition switch, on a standard trans it looks like a straight shot. On an auto trans it is the wire going to the neutral safety switch. As for the back up lights you can use the same wires that went to the standard trans...

Rod, I think your responses assume I went to 4spd. I went to auto from 4spd. 72 customcamper I think this is the right track. It makes sence that ignition wire power is interrupted except when in Park or Neutral position on selector. This would then say that the circuit form ignition power has to come through switch doen on column. Does anyone have pic of wiring diagram to post?

thanks for help so far. Not sure I have it yet but were getting there. This type of thing should be detailed along with the manual to auto swap process on FAQ page. It seems to come up now and then.

I am still looking for method on how to wire up the Neutral safety switch. I appricte the wiring diagram but if I could read it well it might confuse me anyway. I assume that is for stock Automatic truck and not sure if all those wires are present on 4spd wiring harness. It looks like I need a wire run from igintion switch through Neutral switch and to ?

Please help.

Hey Bob, it looks likethe wire goes from the ignition switch to the Neutral safety switch,from there it goes to the small terminal on the right side of the starter solonoid.

I can't find in the garage I'll keep looking but the purple wire leaving the back of the fuse box going to the ignition switch needs to be connected to the neutral safety and then for backup lights real simple tke the back off the fuse box in the cab take the dark green wire to one side of the b/u switch and the light green to the other side

Im wondering the same thing, but let me see if I got this right.

Use old 4spd back up light wires.
Interrupt the little wire going to the starter with the saftey switch?

Does anyone know what the terminals are in the switch its self? Like which ones are the lights and whihc one is for the power......
