stumped on the bed

I had my 72 swb at a small independent body shop for a total turnkey, well to make this very short the deal went to his favor and I went to a totaly dry savings account. so when my truck was brought back to me in boxes baggies and sheet metal, I ahve a very big puzzle that I have to sort out. so can anyone tell me or have pictures about the bed cross sills the distance and how many are bolted to the frame, I have all the parts its just I right now dont have the room to lay everything out to see how it goes together. I Am going to put a new wood bed floor in but Its driving me crazy looking at these cross sills, and trying to figure out where they line up on the frame itself, any help, pictures to ease my mind for I can sleep better would be realy appriciated. I have moved the fuel cell where thespare tire goes so Im in fear that one of the cross sills are going o interfere with the fuel cell. input will be very helpfull here

Do you have the strips that go between the boards? The strips will have pre-punched holes so there's your spacing of course each end is different. The end towards the front will have two closely spaced holes, the first set is for the bed front panel the second one in is your first cross member.

Forgot is this a step side or fleetside?

Ok lets move to the back, the first hole in the strip from the rear is for the rear cross member it looks totally different from the others, is wider and taller and has different mounts to the bed. Ok I have a long step myself, but you should have another cross member at each end moving towards the middle of the bed. You'll probably also have a short cross member that is only about an inch tall that will go in the center either befor or after the wheel hump. There will be a set of holes in the center w/ no cross member. In this thread I was mocking up the bed floor: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php3?t=106779

I have a Fleetside box on my swb. Id like to know which CROSS SILLS ( the long chanel shaped metal rails that support the wood and the strips that go between the wood ) that run from left to right or right to left ,drivers side to passenger side get bolted to the frame of the truck and is there any rubber pads that or a piece of rubber that needs to be between any of the rails from left to right that mount to the truck frame thanks for your help so far guys but as you see I'm still wondering . does any one have a photo of a new bed in the process of being sized on a truck frame with the CROSS SILLS of the bed mounted to the truck frame

I believe all of the board vendors sell the rubber mounting pads for about $15 a set. Here's a link w/ picks of a stepside going together w/o the boards in the way. You'll have to scroll down. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php3?t=92538

tbhsmith,

Numberone son and I just put together his short-step and I'm sure yours is constructed the same.

No I don't think you will be able to mount the cross sills to the frame first. The bolts going down the bed strips (between the wood) go thru the sills. The boards on the outside walls are placed first, then the cross sills are attatched below the boards, with the bolts going thru the bedside rails, wood, then the cross sills. Then you place the wood down laying them on the sills, place the metal strips down, and start dropping the screws thru the strips and attaching the nuts & washers. In a short bed, there are two narrower cross sills towards the middle, with the middle holes (going across the bed) having no cross sills under them. The bed mounting bolts normally go thru the top of the wood, thru the sills, and finally the frame. I don't think that factory used any rubber between the frame and sills.

You can put a couple of the cross sills on the bed and set it on the frame without the wood to help eye-ball how the sills go, using the bed strip holes to line up with the frame.

HTH
Steve
