My 1963 C-20 Long bed (slow Build)

This Thread is my first. Also my first is my 1963 Chevy Long bed. I wanted a truck this time. Cars are just hard to find now, and when you do find one its not worth it. So the new venture began several months ago.I started looking for a 49-54 chevy. Here where i'm from there are some but people are holding on to them.
At work the company mechanic knew i wanted a truck. One day he says "hey, my nephew has a 63 long bed. it needs work but what doesn't that old. I asked him to bring it by at lunch so you can look at it".
So on the trailer it comes. boy it looked like crap. But the body was fairly straight. I said how much? $500 firm and he will deliver it to your drive way. After a few moments and a guarantee from my friend "the mechanic" the engine will fire up, I agreed.
Sure enough it fired up and sounded like a champ. The old glass packs rumbled, no smoke even after seven years being parked. But there was a slight issue with the carb and intake. so the mechanic hooked me up with a 305 engine for $100 which also runs, did the swap and now it sits.I only swapped the intake and carb.

The truck has a 327 engine with a 350 automatic transmission.
It is a 3/4 ton with the 8 lug rims

My goal is to put on disk brakes in the front and swap out the rear end with a 71/72 rear end. after the swap i plan on bagging it. if money allows. I am a certified welder so i can save money there so if any one knows where i can get a set up cheap, hit me up. this will also be my first bag job. but i do have a friend who has done quite a few.

I will post picks once i learn how to

I want to thank lolife99 for all the info he has givin me on this build.

thanks for looking at my thread. if anyone has advice or info please share.
I am always willing to learn

Re: My 1963 C-20 Long bed (slow Build)

Behind the scenes I've been talking to member lolife99. he told me about ECE "Early classics Enterprise". Today i called them to buy the bolt on drop spindles for the C-20. No swapping anything. just take yours off and replace with the new ones. What's great about it is that its a disc brake spindle, not a drum replacement. unfortunately they were out of stock but assured me they could have them made in a few days and ready for pick up or delivery. This spindle is the same as 73-87 only it fits right onto the c-20. So you can buy the parts from the wrecking yard if your on a budget. Because this might end up a graduation gift for my boy, i'm thinking new parts. The asking price for the spindles was $269 i believe. for the simplicity of it, its worth it for me.

there is the link to it.

Re: My 1963 C-20 Long bed (slow Build)

body work is easy to me. engine work no problem. interior i hate. luckily its all metal. i can spray and put in the seats and sun visors. thats the reason i decided to build a truck this time around. less interior.

Re: My 1963 C-20 Long bed (slow Build)

to the ground is the next step. i was going to buy the drop spindles but, i came across a truck. i have to verify the year. i was told its a 71 long bed ''running''. my friend just blew his engine. he needs the engine i need the rolling chassis for the swap. figured we go half on the cost. i was told $500. I hate to destroy a perfectly good running truck for parts. i almost want to just by it as another project. thing is i already have five cars/trucks in my house. if i didnt have a corner house id have no place for them. on top of that there is another truck down the road to that one, same deal same price. might have to choose the better of the two. then save up and go back for the other.

Re: My 1963 C-20 Long bed (slow Build)

If you like that you'll love what's next. I didn't like it so i took it all out. after I put it together I was looking at the ball joints. i decided they needed to be replaced. so it all came off again. I did some more painting and grinding. now it has all new ball joints. once again I put it back together. one side at least. its to dark outside to take pics. will post more soon. but now the new dilemma. It looks good, but the areas around it look crappy. so the more i look at it the more i want to remove the rack and pinion and clean it up the same way. while im at it you know the cross member needs painting and so on. if i dont stop it will be a garage Queen, when is it to much?

Come to a conclusion I will remove the rack and pinion and rebuild, clean and spray it this weekend. I will also clean up and spray the cross member, and a few other little details. Think i have OCD. Or i really like taking things apart just to clean them. yeah freakin right. thats what kids are for.

I was searching craigslist and found my rear axle. called the kid and asked how much. said 220 and he will throw in lowering springs. So i asked, how much for the whole truck. finally we agreed on 350. Im happy with the deal. here it is. oh yeah its a 62 with disc brakes in front. No more searching for parts

Good score!
Looks like the rearend has the chevrolet passenger car bolt pattern.
(5x4.75)
I noticed the S10 wheels on the back.
What front end is under it?

All I know is its a 1962. As you know Im not familiar with trucks. from what i can tell front end is original except for the disc brakes. I am trying to trace them online with all the numbers off of them, but found nothing. he said it was set up for racing but I believe he was selling me crap just so id buy it. I figured id run the numbers later to determine what it all was. I didnt want to lose the deal. there was enough on it to make back my money and then some. Not to mention all the parts i could use. Oh yeah the spindles might be off a camaro. according to these guys and the number GM# 371676
