Snow Plow Question
Hey snow plow guys - I have a question. I want to outfit my 1971 4x4 chassis with a used plow off craigslist or similar.
What years of Chevrolet are "bolt-on"? Just 71 & 72? Up through 87? Through current? I'm tired of shoveling/snow blowing my driveway. Winter isn't that far away. Please help.

You answer may vary depending upon the manufacturer. My experience is with Fisher plows. The push plates are engineered for the application and unless the 73-87 frames (cab forward) are identical to the 67-72 frame you will have issues. Even if the frame is the same you may still have issues with clearance of bumpers and grille. Obviously some parts are 'generic" such as the valve body, hydrualic pump, cables, and hoses. Engine brackets for the pump vary by engine size, can not answer if short/long water pump altered the bracketry or not. Your best bet is to find a setup for the correct year(s). Better yet, purchase a complete setup already installed.
 Your area seems to use Western plow brand. Someone running that setup may provide a totally different scenerio. Good luck.

I guess that is the question.
Is the frame on a 71 & 72 4x4 the same as 73-87? Craigslist is loaded with 73-87 (mostly 85-87) plows. None 72 & older. I'd prefer to NOT have an engine mounted hydraulic pump. Don't the new systems have electric pumps?

I sold Meyers plows in 92-93 and at that time they still listed mounts for the 67-72's. The 73 up frames are similar enough that it shouldn't take much mods to make it work. The systems are self-contained and no need for an engine driven pump.

I am installing a Western plow on my current plow truck that I am building using a Blazer frame with a cab on it. I am running into a clearance problem with the grill so I have moved the carriage forward. I will have to drill different mounting holes for the lower brackets but overall it looks like the Western plow from a 79 4x4 can be made to work with the two mods mentioned.
The width is right for the frame and I will be able to use my Meyer blade on the Western carriage. Jim
