changing filter on TH350 Q's

this is my first gm vehicle with an automatic and was wondering a few things......

1) is there a link that shows how to remove/replace the filter? or is it pretty much self expanitory?

2) how many QTS of atf on a stock setup?

loosen all the bolts in the front half of the pan. let fluid drain. remove all the bolts from the pan, remove pan. take screws out of filter and remove. clean gasket surfaces. place new filter in place with screws. replace gasket on pan, replace pan, retorque bolts.

as far as how much fluid, I am not positive i want to say 6 for a total fluid replacement but don't take my word for it.

Make sure to look for a magnet that may be stuck to the inside of the pan. Sometimes its covered in glop and metallic sludge (hence its purpose), you can pull it off, clean the pan and magnet, then stick it back to the pan.

Also, if your filter kit comes with a rubber gasket, sometimes the holes for the bolts can be a tad small. You can stick the bolts through the pan just enough to squeeze through the rubber gasket, and the gasket will hold all of the bolts and keep itself aligned while you put the pan back up.

Small point but most th350s made 72 and older have a drain plug. My truck th350 out of a 72 Blazer, the th350 in my 72 Chevelle, the th350 in my 71 Chevelle and the 71 th350 out of my junked Monte all have drain plugs. The newer ones have no plug so you have to loosen bolts and let it drain, making a mess no matter what you do.

Once the pan is off it will be obvious what you need to do next regarding the filter.

If memory serves, 3 quarts will get you going again because the fluid in the torque converter doesn't drain when you do this.

True, I forgot that older units had plugs. I wasn't sure on the amount of fluid as I had to fill tc as well on mine and I remember buying 4 and having to go and buy some more.
