How about five on the tree?

Thoughts ond opinions on this please. Could it be done somehow? i like the t-5 swap idea but how about grabbing five from the tree? that would be cool imo.

Anything is possible with enough time effort and most of all money, however, occasionally money can be exchanged for extra time and effort!

The only way I can see this being accomplished would require use of a richmond 5 speed or something of the like with external shift linkages. Then with modifications in the column with an extra arm (or possibly two if you want reverse depending on trans used) and extra gates with springs so you could "feel" witch shift rail you are in like a floor shift, theoretically it could work. Unfortunately as cool as it would be to hide a 5 speed I am afraid the effort required to engineer such an operation would outweigh seemingly one benefit. Not to mention probably being really difficult to shift into the right gear.

Couldn't agree more! Best thing I ever did to my truck was convert to the Hurst floor shifter. Have you seen how long & heavy that reverse/first shift lever is? No wonder they are clunky and wear bushings so quickly.

Maybe there could be a differnt way to accomplish the od trans on the colum has anyone put one of those gear vendors od system on the old 3 on the tree? how would that work and/or function is this possible hw about ground clearance? i havent seen or heard of these being used on this forum. ive been building my next truck in my imagination and really would like to keep a tree shift but all so have a od trans behind the i-6 to make a gas friendly classic dd

I think the GV is a great choice for this except for one thing.$$$ They tend to be pricey.Someone on here has done a GV or Atlas.IIRC it was a GV from a motor home.The adapter may be a bit difficult to find/machine but the gv only needs a toggle to work.I'ts probabaly cheaper and easier to do that than the 5 speed.

I've been toying with the same idea here lately. I think it would be easier to use a Richmond five speed since it has shift levers on the outside of the tranny. Then, it would just be a matter of adding another shift gate to the factory column shifter. I'm sure it could be done, but I'm also sure it would require a custom made shifter mechanism. Do you have access to a machine shop?

You can't do it. The reason is that it won't rhyme any more. It has to remain three on the tree or three over the knee.

I have been thinking of doing a 4 speed overdrive out of an ‘80s C10 and using my stock 3 on the tree. The shift pattern would be the regular H with 1st at the top left and all forward gears on the column. Then using a ’67 style parking brake lever (mines a ’72) make that lever actuate reverse. It would be a heck of a lot more fun to do the 1st to 2nd shift but I haven’t decided if the revese would be too much of a pain, you would have to go to neutral on the column then grab the sideways parking lever to go to reverse.

I think this is a great idea! I'd love to see someone do it. I don't think reverse would be that bad - you don't use it much anyway so it probably would be OK.

If you're going to try it, do it to a tilt column, that'd be cool and couldn't possibly add any more difficulty to it.

I loved my three on the tree GMC, but I could not see having 5 on the tree....plus, as mentioned before, it won't rhyme...lol

I would be more interested in a detailed 4 spd car trans but use the 3 spd column shift. And a form of some kind for reverse lol

A friend has a 68 gmc 6cyl, 4spd on the tree. Blew up a couple 3spds , needed to jam something in it , put in a passanger saganaw 4spd , punched a rod throught the floor for reverse. Seems to work ok , planning on a little more gracefull reverse , maybe an electric solonoid.

When was looking at 3 on the tree info about a year ago I ready that in foreign countries, especially in cabs they continued to use tree shifters much longer than the USA and even included 4 speed & 5 speed trannys. It'd be cool to get some more info on those and even get my hands on 1 of those set ups.
I looked into the gear vendors also, thought about doing it when my carrier bearing broke. I was quoted $1000 for the o/d; plus I'd have to have the driveshaft shortened. The o/d has ears on both ends to connect to the yolk & driveshaft via u-joints.
