Underbed Fuel tank Vent

I've got an underbed fuel tank already installed and working. When I took the box off to repaint the truck I noticed the vent had black around it like it was trying to burn. What can I put on it to keep it from doing this? I had a check valve for power brakes but it wouldn't let enough air out when I filled it.

thanks!
