Rear end is shot

Sad day, just got news the rear end is shot in the truck. Mechanic says $750 minimum to fix it.Pinion gear is wobbling all over. Anyone got a good rear end he wants to part with? My truck is a 68 Short box,half ton,coverted over to 5 lug. Not sure how that was done(bought it that way ) as I have read on the board it is not possible with a 68. Need some help, opinions, etc. Do you thinl I need to replace every thing in the rear, or just the pinion and chance it ?

your rearend seems very badly worn, id look for a diffrent used rear axle in better shape...........

The pinion bearings (inner and outer) would have to be bought new. Since your originals were worn they've probably messed up both the pinion and the ring with a bad pattern. That would mean that your carrier bearings have been taking a pounding from so much deflection+wear in the carrier unit itself. Those damn things will make you poor, and I'm surprised the estimate is only $750.

No. I'd go with a new axle. Don't try to "chance it". Trust me. Take it from someone who was facing this dilema with a 10 bolt corp axle, and decided to have it fixed. It's great now, but it cost me $$$.

I'd try to get one off here, or try at a local wrecker. Worse case scenario you go and buy the new parts, and rebuild it yourself AFTER you've gotten a new one in the truck. Then you could learn (in theory)!

Yeah, the $750 was just a starting point.... Guess I will call the salvage yards tomorrow, see what they got. Problem is, in Michigan, most trucks ad old as mine are up to their axles in mud, not sure its much better....

$100 for installation kit including bearings, $175 for gear set and $250 labor. Maybe add $100 for miscellaneous seals and gaskets (axle bearings and seals, probaly only $50), and a grand total of $625. Sounds like your mechanic is bonin' ya'! I rebuild rears for $200 in the truck and $150 out of it, too bad you aren't in TX.

yup, expect to pay around a thousand after it is said and done. - did that whole scene two weeks ago, and am still recovering from it. - do it before it locks up on you though, I learned it the hard way. trailing arms are a biatch to locate too.

Do wish I lived in Tx Mike c, I would be callin ya....Worst part is, I just replaced springs, saddles,trailing arms,and cups. Had it all apart 4 weeks ago. Piss me off, gotta go do it again.Well, gotta call the salvage yards, maybe find a rebuilder....
