Drag racers comment please....

So anyway I got me a 68 chevy C10 long bed and I was wondering how much of a 60' the stock rear end is capable of? before I put some big sticky tires under it, what kinda thing would u guys recommend? tranny is just a TH350 but I have an idea to put a built T56 in it for fun which is worse i know but im not serious about drag racing it, it is more of a fun car but I like to know I wont break anything. I have an auto/stalled Z28 for drag racing. Any chassis mods that are a must, like how sub frame connecters are on Fbody's type of stuff? Is it safe to assume the trucks weight is around 4000lbs? anyone actually weighed a striped down one? I dont have power steering or power brakes no AC, radio, basicaly a bench seat and steering wheel. Ive got 2/3" spring/shock drop on it and new rear trailing arms with a rebuilt 400 bored over to a 406 with some old camal heads on it, but has a TPI from a vette topend on it which i need to get tuning on buts thats all covered. Sorry for the long post and thanks

I rebuilt the 12bolt in my truck ,new eaten posi an installed 3.73 gears and havent had a problem. I think these rears are pretty strong . I have a longbed with a big block ,not sure what the weight is.I do have fun at the track.http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...t=MVI_0948.flv

My brother is pulling low 1.70's in his '78 GMC with the factory 12 bolt. His best run is a 11.98 @ 112.11 -- 7.58 @ 92.86 in the 1/8 -- 1.71 60'. He has a set Richmond Gear 4.10's and an Auburn mini spool with stock axles. The 12 bolts are plenty durable. As you can tell by the pic, the truck is twisting up pretty for a 3800# with a Small block. Here are the specs:

Re: Drag racers comment please....

I would at very least go with some Moser axles and c-clip eliminators, and weld your axle tubes to the centre section. I ate out a spider gear on my eaton posi in turn caused a crack in the carrier a bite out of the housing and a nibble on my LPW braced cover. I run a truck 12 bolt with Richmond 4:10's, Eaton posi, Moser 30 spline axles and eliminators, and a LPW braced cover, with welded tubes. I have run 1.52 sec 60's, my truck weighs 4373lbs. with driver, I've spoke to Moser about going to 33 spline axles and a spool, I told them what it was in and what I'm doing with it they said it wouldn't last. My 12 bolt gets noisier every race, I went to a solid pinion bearing spacer last time it was apart and it's time to adjust the preload again. In my honest opinion the question is not IF it will break but more like WHEN it will. Alot may dissagree with me and thats fine, but I put alot of money into my 12 bolt and now wish i would have put it into a 9" instead.

Here are some stock axle pics for you, there's a reason why to NHRA tech in the 10's you are required to have aftermarket axles and eliminators. These are both in the same day, mind you they weren't truck 12 bolts but they also aren't heavy high power vehicles. Last year the truck did the same to the passenger side LOL.

I'm stuck at 14.0s my 60s are high 1.7s I think a higher stall and 4.10s would put me in the 13s and 1.6s in the 60ft ,but I drive this thing alot. Might go with a plate system and keep the 3.73s and juice it at the track..

thats a really low 60' for runnin 14.0's...

a few years ago my nova ran 14.60@98mph and had a 2.8 60'

it did spin pretty hard off the line.. but i figured a 2.0 or maybe 1.9 60' was right for a low 14

Your right .. I went and doug up the time slips and found the ones before I bought the drag radials and 60s were 2.01s ,et 14.2s, after the drag radials the 60s were 1.9s , et 14.0s, 96 mph ..

I'm hoping to be running in the 12s with mine, and I'll be running 4.10s and an eaton posi in the stock 12bolt.

Re: Drag racers comment please....

ok so I think ill be cheap and just get some moser axles and C-clips just in case and try and keep the 60's in the 1.7+ range which is good enough for a fun truck, I would like to dip into the 11's and be very streetable. Any good weight reduction mod tips out there? Oh and Do they make a fiber glass hood like this? I can only find this in steel but I love the looks of it

Re: Drag racers comment please....

they say a 10th in your 60' is worth 2 10th's in the 1/4 so with that you should be in the 13's with ur nova and with a 98 trap speed I dont see why not.

well, i never took it back to the track, but i didnt have a stall, or sticky tires, and the cam that was in there didnt like much more than 5500 rpm (it was about wrapped out at the 1000' mark). hell i didnt even have a floor shifter in it then haha

about a year later i put a XE294 cam in, and new/bigger valve springs, and a TCI super streetfighter 3800 stall in... and i have some 29" hoosiers for it... so i think it would hook alot better. then again the 355 developed a nice knocking sound so im starting all over with it. i guess it didnt like the 7500 rpm drives around the neighborhood
