What happened and why?
I got my truck running for the first time since rewiring, adding a new fuel line, relocating my alternator, adding headers, and adding a starter heat shield. Rebuilt the carb and got the truck running the way I wanted.
I went to start the truck the next time and heard an arc. Looked under the hood and found this. Either burnt or fried battery cable. I am guessing it arced to the heat shield? Weird how it ran fine and then this happened. I don't think my headers would have melted it would they? My alternator wire and plug wires aren't melted.

looks like it originally happened from the stock exhaust. by moving it around while installing the headers you must have put it too close to the engine causing the arch...

Maybe that wire got a nick or cut in it from the sharp edge of heat shield causing it to arc off. Also, what size is that melted wire? Looks kinda small if it's the one going from + post on battery to starter.

If you zoom in (I did on my phone) just to the left of the big black spot you can see the insulation on the wire is nicked. If the wire was indeed arcing I'd say the big black spot is covering a deeper cut in the insulation likely from the heat shield. Remove the wire and take a closer look.

The starter cable would not arc to ground unless it was actually touching the ground source, unlike a spark plug wire which will create an arc. So If the starter cable isn't touching a ground source in that location it has to be getting burnt from the headers or a spark plug that is not screwed in all the way... Spray some carb cleaner on it to see if any of the black stuff washes off. LockDoc

I will take it off and clean it up and see. Looks like it may have been nicked a little. Any thoughts on how the cable should be routed or using a heat shield on it? I am really sick of messing with the starter.
