Then it's the base gear for the year. Most of the 70's and 80's the default gear was 3.08.

Nice site for axle info.

My truck lists the gear ratio on the option sticker in the glove compartment. Most of the people with 80s trucks I have talked to have 2.73s.

GQ1 Doesn't mean any specific ratio. It's true that it's the 'standard' ratio, but it depends on the year, the GVW of the truck (and there are more possibilities than just 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton), the engine and the transmission.

For example the standard ratio for a 1984 1/2 ton 4x4 under 6500# GVW is 2.73 but a 1980 1/2 ton 2wd under 6500# is 3.08.

The above codes would probably only be found on the build sheets.

I GURANTEE I don't have 3.08's...shoot, I WISHED I did! They're either 3.73's or 4.10's...I think I'll spin the tire and see how many times the driveshaft spins...

My truck had the following options

1: 305 v8 engine
2: 4 spd automatic transmission
3: standard gear ratio (GQ1
4: 31x10.5" tires front, rear, and spare
5: locking differential (G80)

its an 1985 model shortbed 1/2 ton with a GVW of 6100 lbs, and it had 3.08 gears, talk about one retarded factory combo, OD couldn't even be used because it would only turn like 1600 rpm at 65mph.
