Re: Steering Stabilizer
I have seen 'em on 2WD rigs, but rarely. I have one on my K20.... but I kinda question their benefits. If you have problems, they'll help mask the problems. If everything is good, a steering stabilizer is probably not necessary. Just my 2 cents worth....

Re: Steering Stabilizer
I have a Superlift steering stabilizer on my 72' C10 that I installed when I worked at a 4wd shop. I mostly did it just to have one to show and because the cost was cheap. I dont really know how much it helps, but at the time I had very large (32") all-terrain tires on the truck and I felt it couldnt hurt. I can post up some pics of it if you need/want some, I dont have any on my work computer.

Re: Steering Stabilizer
Not aimed at me but I'll reply anyway.... I have run mine with and without a SS. In all honesty, the only difference with it installed is the steering takes a wee bit more effort, no doubt due to a lil friction (or resistance to moving) within the SS. No shake rattle or roll going down the road without it.

Re: Steering Stabilizer
Honestly I agree, Im not sure how much difference it made/makes, my steering box was very very worn out at the time so it helped "tighten" up the steering a bit. Now that I have a new steering box Im not sure that it is doing much, probably just helps with the feed back to the wheel on wash board/grooved roads.
I didnt have a chance to take any new pics, but here are some older ones that give the general idea. The bracket on the drivers side uses one of the steering box bolts and the other one just u-bolts to the center link.

Re: Steering Stabilizer
okay, i replaced my tie rods idler arm and pitman arm and my steering is still loose, so im assuming my box is worn out as well. i might have to invest in a steering stabilizer. im also running 35 inch tires now

Re: Steering Stabilizer
If a new rag joint doesn't help, and your steering box is bad, you need a new box a lot more than you need a steering stabilizer...

Re: Steering Stabilizer
Have you inspected/replaced the rag joint?
On a side note, on my K20 I recently discovered another source of slop, and that is when one of the nuts mysteriously backs off of the LH u-bolt which holds the leaf springs to the front axle. In low speed/high resistance turns the steering arm just pushed the whole axle back rather than turning the wheel.

Re: Steering Stabilizer
It is the rubber disc that attaches the steering shaft to the steering gear.

Re: Steering Stabilizer
one in the same, rag joint is gearhead speak.
They probably sell a rebuild kit in the Help! section of your favorite auto parts store.

Re: Steering Stabilizer
FWIW, my '75 Monte Carlo had one from the factory, so they're by no means limited to 4WD vehicles. No idea if they came on our trucks, however:
Section 6.865 of the parts book - "Stabilizer Unit - Steering Anti Shimmy" is listed ONLY for 4WD and only for Blazer (K). |

The nice thing about losing my memory is I get to meet so many new people. I still wonder if the stabilizer does anything on a 2WD 3/4 ton, though. If they put them on Monte Carlos, they're not just for big tires.
