Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
There should either be a screw to undo, or a u-shaped piece of metal to slide that holds the lock in place?

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
Haven't taken the locks out of my '56 yet, so I'm flying blind- can you put the screwdriver in and tap it with a hammer (not too hard), or can you get a pair of vise-grips around the bolt (LAST resort)?
The VERY last resort would be to chisel off the bolt head and then drill/extract the screw... but you'd be AMAZED at how many bolts I've gotten free with some PB and a tap ofr two of the hammer |

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
Remove the door handle from the door by removing the two screws that hold it on. They are reached from inside the door, one in the front and one back near the rear. Don't drop the rear screw into the door. With the handle off remove the snap ring that holds the button in the handle and the lock, spring, and cups will come out.
The snap ring can be difficult to remove so you might just take the handle with the lock still in it to the locksmith and let him remove it. |

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
You are trying to get the ignition key, right? Door may not match, just remove the ignition switch, mark and remove wires, and take it to the lock smith. The face bezel unscrews, you can use a screwdriver to gentle tap the notch in the surface to get it loose, they ing switch drops out the back.
Either way (door or ing) locksmith will need to the cylinder to key it. On the door, just spray offending screw with pb blaster or similar solvent, you are dealing with a steel screw in pot metal door handle. sometimes trying to tighten the screw will get it moving then just working it out.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
If it's the clip inside the door (see pic below), you should be able to just tap it out of the way.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
If the ignition key is the same as door, then I'd take the ignition out to get the key. Much easier.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
Man that truck must really be rusted up, usually a sound tap counter clock wise with a screw driver in one of the grooves loosens it. The switch housing is held in place by a notch or flat place in the dash metal. If that is messed up you might need a helper to hold the switch while you rotate the bezel. This is what you are trying to remove:

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
I do not have the original ignition switch in my truck, switched to column mount. The bezel is reproduced and relatively stout, the trick is to apply the force more sideways than into the dash.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
Sounds like the kid who previously owned it may have cross-threaded the ignition...
Here's a thought on the door- if the truck is moveable, try opening the door against a post/etc, so that the door handle is against the post. put a block of wood in between the post and the handle so that you can apply some added pressure to the screw. Give it another good tap or two, and you should be able to get the screw out... rust or no rust. |

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
I found my "original" ignition switch and found it is not an original 59 one, but a later one that was wired in. It does not have any key code on it. here is a pic of the handle removed. the close up shows that to remove the cylinder you compress the center taking the pressure off of the internal snap ring (screwdriver pointing to it). You work the snap ring out with a small flat screw driver. I put the handle against the door and cannot see how you could do it with the handle in place without cutting a hole in the inner door panel. If you cannot man handle the screws out they do make a tool, I got it for my old Ducati when I had it, that has a phillips head that when you tapped it with a hammer it applied a rotational force. Used for tightening and loosening the side cover screws. Like Mac says if you can get it up against something, you could use vice grips on a screwdriver to get some leverage.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
The original keys had the code stamped on a part that knocked out of the key blank. The two knockouts (round key, square key) could be threaded on a ring. The dealer always did the knockout on delivery and the codes were in an envelope.
As long as the owner stays in his "mad" or "insane" mode it will be difficult to know what the actual problem is. Working on old stuff can be frustrating but the solution is usually found by stepping away from the problem, not attacking it.
