You can use a magnetic pickup. Not sure of the implications, but I know this pickup can be used for the tach signal. Think it measures crank rotation by the harmonic balancer somewhere.

The Ford 2.3 in the Ranger gets it's rpm signal from the crankshaft position sensor to the computer ( PCM)
Ford calls this signal the PIP ( profile ignition pickup) The factory tachs in these pickups use a tach signal sent from the pcm to the gauge cluster. I'm not sure if an aftermarket tach would be able to operate properly using this same signal or not?

oops. I guess I didn't read your post very well. I thought you said you had a 4 cyl from a 98 Ford Pickup. Anyway, if it's from a car, the DIS ign systems all operate basically the same way.

If you're using the original Ford wiring harness, The 104 pin connector that
goes into the PCM should have very small numbers on the back side that correspond to each pin. The tach signal wire out of the pcm is a tan wire with a violet stripe. It comes out of pin 48.

WOW, how long have you been sitting on that information? Do you work on these things daily or what? Very impressive.
