Barnfind 1970 c10

For my first post I thought I would post my project. It is a 1970 Chevrolet c10.

Another picture of the engine.

My Father in law bought this truck new. It is a 70 Chevy longbed. It may have 100k on it or less. If it is 100k its not much over it. Its in really good shape and just needs minor stuff. We plan to paint it as it does have some flakes. But no major rust through and looking the other day I only saw about 3 pieces of rust . The biggest was about the size of a quarter and only surface rust. We plan on new tires, brakes, hoses, battery, belt, and any other minor stuff. We plan on keeping it original.

It had been stored in the barn for years as my FIL did not drive the last few years of his life. He drove this on rare occasions as he had another beater truck to drive. My MIL gave it to my wifes brother and we got tired of it going to waste. So we asked if he would sell it and he did. When I got it out of the barn it looked brown as you could not tell the color. I got it out and washed it off. I plan on rebuilding the brakes and replacing stuff like plugs and hoses in the next few weeks. I know a guy that is really great on engines that will come and get it started. I plan on having everything replaced except for the points so when he comes over he can tune it up.

It doesn't look like it needs much and I hope we have it running in a month or so. We sure could use it now. I need to find a replacement for the fake wheel nuts that go on the original hubcaps. Anyone know of a place that sells them? I have the original factory hubcaps but some of the pieces are missing. My wife and I want to keep it original. I do have a original Chevrolet 8 track with the bowtie on the door from the late 60s/early 70s I plan on putting in it to replace the kraco one in there now.

Cool truck- looks really unmolested...

I think I have the same hubcaps and am missing some of the nuts you speak of.

I haven't looked anywhere for them yet though....

Nice looking truck!
Do the easy stuff first and drive it. Think hard about paint, the paint is only original once. Looks great from here.

Re: Barnfind 1970 c10

Thanks for the welcome. As far as the truck goes the truck was painted once many years ago. I remember when it was. Other than the kraco 8 track ,topper cover, seat cover and any parts like hoses alternator I think it is original. I think he also had one head redone and other than that it is all from the factory.

There are so many different versions of condition like survivor, original ,etc here is what we plan. Hopefully anything we replace will be the same as original. In other words it has drum brakes so we will go back with that. If the seat cover is shot we want to go back with a original looking cover. Paint will be the same color as from the factory. We plan on hopefully using the original hubcaps if I can find either new nuts to go on them or a junker hubcap to get them from. Only thing I expect to change is to replace the 8 track with a original chevy 8 track. I work on electronics and I got this 8 track years ago. It is a factory underdash 8 track that would fit perfect in the truck. I also have a original Firebird or Camaro underdash 8 track with its underdash mounts to restore as well.

So hopefully if all goes well I will have all the parts to repair the brakes and other stuff by labor day. We will see how that goes.

Re: Barnfind 1970 c10

I did a little work to it this week. I replaced the dash on Friday. Although we are keeping it as original as we can thing like the old dash that was in pieces we are replacing. We also want to recover the seat as it has the usual cracks and splits. Even though it was cheaper than a original for my old truck that would be close to 800 this one was a bigger pain to put in. But I got it in and set. I also have some new stainless mirrors but I am waiting until we start driving it.

I also went by yesterday and spent a chunk of change. I got the last of the brake parts needed for a rebuild, fan belt, antifreeze and hoses . I also had a carb rebuild kit ordered. I plan on redoing the brakes and hoses this weekend. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will have a buddy come over and rebuild the carb. So it is on its way. Next big purchase will be a battery and tires. After that I should be able to get it on the road.

Great truck... you say you will keep the brakes all drums because that's what it came with. Wait till you drive it!

I'd hate to have to do a panic stop in mine.... I think a conversion to discs is in its future....

John, before you do that, you might consider spending about $150, and half a Saturday to install a brake booster to your current configuration. I just recently did it, and it is absolutely wonderful. It stops on par with disc brake vehicles I own or have owned. I know lots of folks like to talk about disc brakes as some sort of holy grail bragging rights, but unless you're towing extremely heavy loads, or carrying a huge payload, I doubt you'd notice much difference.

Does the booster fit flush against the firewall or is it spaced out on that weird bracket? If its flush mounted, I'm in.

It's on a small bracket, but a stock type disc brake power setup uses a bracket that's almost identical too, so I'm not sure what the problem is?

Is the engine a 307? I notice its a 3 on the tree as well. I had a 69 CST 307 with the 3 on the tree and it ran quiet and smooth. That is a nice powertrain combo for a daily driver truck.

307 it is. I rode in it years ago and it ran fine. Smooth truck the best I remember.

Re: Barnfind 1970 c10

Here is a picture of a 8 track I want to put in. I am not sure of the original vehicle but it is a original one for a chevy. I have two more for parts but they are different cases, these were made by Automatic if I remember correctly. This one has the underdash case with it as well. I plan on rebuilding it and putting in a new belt. I got this years ago and wanted to rebuild it to sale. I am glad I didn't sale it. I think it was in a load of stuff I got from a fellow who was a Delco radio repairman. I bought his shop out when he retired. I also got lots of manuals in the deal.

Re: Barnfind 1970 c10

Help!! Seriously first things first. I am just about ready to see if it can run. I noticed a issue that may not be a issue, it could be just because its been siting so long. On the manual shifter on the column I noticed that I can't move the shifter forwards or backwards. It can go up or down. I looked under the hood and it has two levers that go to it. I can move each lever up or down under the hood. I am wondering if this will clear up once it is running. Best I remember I could pull the shifter towards me and push up or down and also push away from me and then push up or down originally. IF you have any info I would love to hear it.

On to the truck parts installed and work done. As of now I have oil changed, new plugs, wires, distributor cap, all new hoses on radiator and heater, new rubber gas hoses, and new gas pump. I also ordered a new gas tank pickup and outside gas filler hose seal but they are not here yet. I also put a new gas filter and cleaned the tank. I did the wd40 in the pistons as suggested and it turns over great. I also have the breaks rebuilt with new hoses, brake shoes and brake cylinders. I have a guy coming over next week if he is able and he is a good carb guy. I don't have luck on carbs and get him to fix mine and to do tuneups. So hopefully I will have it running next week.

Tomorrow I plan to put the tank back in and sit the seat in but not bolt it in until the new sender is here. Plans after it is finally running is to take the original wheels off so I can have the tires removed. I then plan to sand and clean the rims then repaint them. Then I can get new tires. I was talking to the wife today and we decieded for Christmas to go in and buy us a new seat cover like the original for ourselves. I bought a new dash and it is installed now. We also plan to put a new exhaust system and paint job, the truck has been painted once before so it is not the factory paint job. I have been busy and here are a couple of pics.

Here is the new hoses and other items. I still need to do a few things like fastening the heater hoses.

Here is the inside. The seat is out for now due to cleaning the gas tank so I cleaned the rubber mat .

If anyone has thoughts on the shifter I would appreciate hearing it.
