light problem

my truck is having some light issues my lights work when i turn on the switch but when i turn the turn siganl on the tail light goes out on the left side and the right stays lit and when the right is going everything works fine then when you press the brake pedal the left goes completely out and the right works fine but when the lights are off the turn signal and brakes work as they should
i have tried changing out light switches, bulbs and changing the tail lamp buckets
does anybody have any suggestions

Re: light problem

same exact thing happened to me....i messed with the taillight... and then when i turned my lights on and pressed brake it did the same where the left went out...flipped the right blinker and everything goes off flip the left blinker and my right ones blink.... i would take your lenses off your taillights and check the ground..make sure you have two bolts in the housing and make sure it hits the metal or whatever when you screw it in..thats how it grounds itself...i only had one bolt in my left side so i stuck a bolt in and it grounded it and fixed the problem....let me know if this worked or not

Re: light problem

I would think it is a ground issue as well. Search the site, there is multiple threads about it. People have said that going through/adding more grounds fixes the problems and makes all the lights brighter.

Re: light problem

It is the turn signal switch in the steering colum I bet. They do that when they start to where out.

Re: light problem

there should be a grond strap from one of the crossaills of the bed to the crossmember of the frame if not make one up and install it//that solves lots of assend light problems

Re: light problem

There is a slight chance that it is a bad ground, however,
Remove the tail light lens on the drivers side, take the bulb out. Ground a test light on one of the 5/16 headed bolts holding the tail light assembly in place. Have an assistant depress the brake, while you check for power on the bulb contact.
*BE CAREFULL NOT TO ARC OUT THE TEST LIGHT ON ANYTHING ELSE METAL... everything that is metal there is a ground, and you'll be swapping out the fuse if you arc it*
If you have no power, then you actually have a wire issue.
Even though you just replaced it, I would swap the bulbs out, left for right, just to double chack. Lower cost lamps have been known (more than once) to be crap out of the box.
From there, i would inspect the wires under bumper... you know, where the last 3 P.O. spliced in trailer harnes plugs. IIRC, yellow is the wire you want to pay special attention to. (If I'm wrong, then it is dark green)
Once the under bumper area is OK, if the light is still bad, I would give the rest of the chassis harness (going up the dvr fraimrail up to the firewall) a quick once over and then go to the turn signal switch.
The reason the light goes out all together, is becouse the tail light part (brown wire) turns off when the bright side of the bulb comes on, this is to reduce heat, and the dim one being light up is kinda redundant anyways.

Re: light problem

good deal. Sometimes the bad grounds act like this, but usually you'll get the light on the other side acting funny in the reverse mannor.
