I am now in the market for a replacement for my 3/4 ton rear end. I have the Eaton 10 bolt and want a 14 FF. Is there a prefered year and engine to locate a 3:73 axle ? Or do I just dig through salvage yards til I find one ? I will also be changing the front axle to 3:73 at a later date. Where is the best place to find a Dana 44 with 3:73 ? Or should I just buy gears and install them into my case ? Thanks.

Most 14 bolts are 4.10 or 4.56. For 3.73s, you might look for a truck with a diesel. There are some 3.73 axles out there. If you don't want to move the spring pads, you will need one from a one ton truck, not 3/4 ton. Shock mounts will have to be moved on any 14 bolt to be used in your truck. 3.73 D44s are common in 4X4s from the '67 - '72 era. You would want to look for a '71 or '72 to get disk brakes, and most 6 cyl. trucks will have the 3.73s.

Any SRW 14 bolt FF will work, but if you find one from a single rear wheeled 1 ton, the spring perches will be 40.5" apart........which is what you need for a 67-72 truck. You can use one from a 3/4 ton but the spring perches are at 42" so they will need to be moved.

You will also need to move one of the shock tabs so they are both on the front of the axle.

You may also want to check u-joints size and parking brake set-ups, there may be some differences.

If are looking for a Dana 44 to match the 14bff....get one from a 1977-up 3/4 ton. These use the internal hubs as well as the stronger 297X ujoint axle shafts. Obvioulsy just make sure you match the gear ratios front to rear.

Thanks guys. I either need a five speed or a gear change. The 4:10's are killing me and since I never use 1st gear now, a rear change would give me the top where I need it and still have a good low. I will also be going to disc in the rear so I want to get started now.
Does the 77 have the same large style hubs that my 72 has ? Am getting new large hubs and would hate to not use them.

NU2-72, I WAS LOOKING FOR A FF ALSO. I FOUND THAT MOST AUTOMATIC EQUIPT TRUCKS HAD 373. AND THE 4 SPEED HAD VERSIONS HAD 410 AND UP.

Kevin, stay away from 14 bolts from vans as they are wider than the truck rears, as for your large lockouts you will have to use the wheel hubs from the 44 you have now on the later model axle in order to use the large spicers, spindles and stub shafts are the same. I talked to a guy from Leavonworth at the Woodlands swapmeet that had a 3:73 14 bolt for sale[I think 200.00] and had a lot of chevy 1 and 3/4 ton driveline parts, I got his number if you need it.

hmmmm.. I got a van 14bolt because it was wider. I want the rear width to more closely match the front.

Take a tape measure, too and check the width. Most that I have found in 3/4 ton pickups were the same width, the one tons are different. Also if the one ton didn't have beveled nuts, the studs will be severely worn and require stud replacement. The vans that I looked at were not only wider, but semi-floaters. A good junkyard can tell you which truck you need to look at. If they can't, I go on down the road and find another yard.

i have a 14 bolt ff here in missouri i would sale, it came from a 76 single wheel ton truck. I am not sure of the ratio but if some one will tell me what to check i can find out.
