10 bolt swap Q's
Lost the rear in my '72 Cheyenne. It's a 1/2 ton 2wd. I've got a 10 bolt out of a '99 Suburban I am probably gonna swap in.
Anybody have a part # for a conversion u joint to go from the 1310 style that the 12 uses to the yoke on the 10? Not sure what style the GMT400s used. Also looking for a part # for wheel studs that'll let me go from the metric to 1/2x20. Thanks |

Re: 10 bolt swap Q's
I would think with the cost and time it is going to take to get the newer 10 bolt installed you would be better off rebuilding the stock 12 bolt or finding another one. Assuming you have the coil spring rear. You're going to need the trailing arm mounts, panhard bar mount, the coil spring mounts, and the adapters you mentioned. Plus the 12 bolt is a much better rear than the 10 bolt.

Re: 10 bolt swap Q's
I don't think they had discs in 99. This is the last year for the suburban in the 88-98 gmt 400 body style. I don't care for the ten my self but to each his own.

Re: 10 bolt swap Q's
Yes that's very true, but his axle came from a 1999... never the less I agree about the ten bolt!

That was a 5 second google search. There's a lot more than just that kit available. The 12 is only better than the 10 if.... You're putting a lot of power to the rear or plan to race. These 10's come behind LS engines and survive just fine for a DD, or mild performance build. |

Re: 10 bolt swap Q's
Yep, the Burb was the GMT400 bodystyle- no discs on the 10 bolt.
For the brackets, I would be using the kit that Speedway sells. Just gotta figure out the u joint and wheel studs. |

Re: 10 bolt swap Q's
About an inch wider than my stock '72 12 bolt. Be warned.... that most likely isn't a real posi. Probably the G80 GovLoc. People are scared to death of them. LOL

Re: 10 bolt swap Q's
I specifically worded my original post to NOT include the word OPINION. If you have one, great. Keep it to yourself. I don't care about how anybody feels about the 10 vs 12 debate. I'm no inexperienced rookie.
I had a thread closed and deleted, and I was put on "probation" (how gay is that? Lol) for getting into it with another member about this swap. So, please- don't screw up my thread w any opinion posts. I'm looking for part numbers, thank you. |

Re: 10 bolt swap Q's
Following, because I too have a 99 burb rear end that I'm thinking of putting under my 70.

Re: 10 bolt swap Q's
Well, got the wheel stud problem figured out. Took a bit of research, but I found one that shares identical dimensions with the stock metric wheel stud, but is 1/2x20. Do your own investigating, of course, but this works for my scenario.

Re: 10 bolt swap Q's
For the u joint measure the cap diameter and width, there are tables of u joint sizes to identify the 10 bolt joint. Let me do search

Re: 10 bolt swap Q's
I think that site shows conversion joints too. Or type in Google the conversion joint needed such as 1310 to 1350 conversion u joint. They even have the conversion joints at oreillys autozone and rock auto for cheap. Searched those last year for my 72 dart Dana 60 build

Gonna go tomorrow and look into the Moog/Precision 372. It might be what I'm looking for. |

Re: 10 bolt swap Q's
Thanks to a 4 yr old thread & a post by Tx Firefighter, it looks like the u joint needed is indeed the Precision 372.
Now the wild card is whether or not the driveshaft will work as-is. The 12 bolt is still under my truck, so its not easy to get an accurate measurement from the axle tube centerline to the centerline of the yoke thats on it. |
