Newcomer: Opinions on rear disc brakes - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi all, I bought a 72 C10 three weeks ago and recently found this cool site. As you can see below it's not exactly a cherry truck, actually a bit of a dung'r, but I plan on fixing it up for around the farm and as the occasional fun driver.

My question is, apart from buying one of the many rear disc brake kits out there, has anyone found a junkyard bolt-in that works without too much modification. Such as not requiring a lathe to open up center holes in discs, etc...

I was digging around and found this site for modifying a 12 bolt Camaro rear axle to use calipers and brackets from a 77-79 Deville and rotors from a 79 -81 Trans-Am.

Is there any reason why this wouldn't work for the 12 bolt in my C10?

You can use the older lincoln rear ends with minor mods,they already have discs and are 9 inch I think

They should bolt on. I have that setup that Ill prob end up putting on my subruban instead of my lemans to help with braking when towing the car. The housing ends should be the same. The only thing that I have ran into so far is that you might have to get the axle turned down to fit into the the rotor. Other then that it should bolt up. You will have to find a master cylinder for disc/disc. Good luck finding the setup tho. The junk yard that I got the calipers, rotors, and backing plates from wanted to charge me $175 for it. I ended up paying $100. They are over priced on all of thier stuff, that why i try to not go to them. Or you can buy the parts new from an auto parts store.
Oh my stuff came off of a 79 WS6 firebird. Another thing to watch out for is the ebrake cables. They are on different sides as are the calipers, one side might hit a shock mount or something else. Something I was told to watch out for when swaping them into a 64-72 a body car.

Oh yeah since you have a 72, your truck should be 5 lug. The deville rotors should have the same bolt pattern. The camaro/firebird rotors are 5 on 4.75 bolt circle. Your truck and the deville should be 5 on 5 bolt circle.

jays68yak Re: the Deville rotors, so it sounds like I should be able to get everything I need from a Deville. Did you use the Firebird parts because that was what you could get or because they fit better?

As far as pricey junkyard parts goes, since it'll be a while before I need the parts I'm hoping that the father of a friend will be able to scrounge me up a deville, he has incredible luck finding junkers for nothing. The laugh was a local salvage yard called him once to see if he had a Taurus tranny amoung his collection! He does have an 80? Eldorado sitting in his yard, anything salvageable from that?

dubie: When I bought it I actually intended to replace the flatdeck with a standard longbox, but after some thought I decided to build a Goliath flatbed for it. The old one was mostly wood and has rotted away.

The truck itself is pretty much as basic as they can get, 3 on the tree, 250 straight six, no chrome(well nearly none), no gauges, no ps, no pb, no radio (although someone added one, but I still have the blank-out panel) no cigarette lighter, no door switches for the dome light, hmmm oh well if there's anything I forgot assume it doesn't have it. Except rust, the floor and the frame are pretty much gone, I picked up a 68 California frame for it last week that's solid, I was amazed it still has some of the chassis black on it.

Its friday, I have an hour left of work. Dont feel like doing anything, and Im bored.

I got the firebird parts cuz thats what i found, i wasnt even looking for it, just came upon it. I had read that they could work so i got them. I have yet to even bother looking for devilles. I believe they are the same parts between the two cars. 76-79 deville and 79-81 ws6 firebird/trans am. Not sure about anything being salvageable from the 80 eldorado.

Now that is interesting, from one of those ebay ads it would seem that Seville brakes would work too if they are on a live axle.

Cool, this is a great start, now I just have to dismantle my donor frame blast it, paint it, take apart a truck and put it back together again. And fix up the broken and rusted bits, should be simple.

I thought the 77-79 Sevilles were basically slightly modified Novas. If so, the bolt pattern is the small one. I may be off base (nothing new), but I also think they mean it works on a car 12-bolt, not a truck one.

the car and truck housing bolt patterns are different as are the tube diameters. cad seville will work on passenger cars but need modifications for trucks.

Thanks for the help, I'll take some measurements off of the truck axle and compare them to the axle on a deville when I find one. There actually was one in the local ISell paper for $500, it also had a 452? in it, if I had the cash right now I'd have it.
