Brake/Spindle question
Maybe GMC Paul will answer this one since I plan on buying one of his kits . . .
Will that kit for $209 (the rotors) and some salvage 71-87 spindles bolt directly into my truck? (I don't even yet know what spindles bolt to) It's a 69 2WD coiled manual drum/drum that I plan on converting to power disc/drum. Would I be better off getting new spindles too (the $450 kit)? I am on a very tight budget and I know I can get those spindles cheaper than new ones. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Jason Houston, TX |

If I understand you right you want to switch your front end to power disc brakes from the current non-power drum brakes?
Stock height spindles for discs are available used from anyone that has installed drop spndles to their truck. The dropped spindles would most likely have to be purchased new. The cheapest way to do this is to buy the parts off of a 71 0r 72 truck and install them. Actually the easiest way would be to install a full crossmember from a later disc truck. If the donor truck was power disc you could also retrieve the master cylinder booster and proportioning valve. Also the disc front ends for the 71 and 72 rucks are 5 lug so you would have to switch the rear at some time to match your lug pattern and save you the grief of having to carry two spares : - ) I hope this helps

Well, I want to keep the 6 lug pattern so as not to buy new rims. I am prepared to spend to buy the $209 kit from gmcpauls and salvage spindles or the complete $450 kit, if needed. I am wondering what spindles will bolt on to Paul's rotor kit? 71-71 only?

That kit does require the 71 or 72 spindles.
Post a parts wanted ad on the parts board for stock71 or72 spindles and update your profile to reflect that you are in Houston Texas. Try to find local board member to purchase from to save the shipping cost. The only other question that I would have if I were to do this is: Are the ball joints the same size for a 69 as they are for a 71-72 and are the brakelines the same size. To make the brakes power is going to require the master cyl. with the actuator rod, the booster and prop valve and some changes in the brake lines.

balljoints do differ and brake lines run in front of the engine cradle on disc brake trucks and 6 lug rotors will fit on all 71-up spindles, your best bet is really to fid a 71-87 parts truck and take entire front end and install it under your truck and then put 6 lug rotors on and reroute some lines like the 71 72 or 73-87 lines are routed.
71 72 lines run under frame and 73-up ru through frame, coorect holes for 73-up hoses are in your frame already. ony the upper balljoints changed i 73 and its reccomended to swap to 71 72 lower amrs if using 71 72 spindles, and use 73-up lowr arms if using 73-up spindles, good luck |
