When you hire the movers based on their car hauling experience...

Don't forget to remind them not to wreck your truck.

After living away from home in a hotel for 6 weeks, yesterday was the big day when my family, pets, all my household items, and the Wallet Eater arrived at our new home. Unfortunately, the moving company's regular driver wasn't available, so they hired a day laborer to drive. (Hmmm... already starting to sound like a bad idea?). Yesterday morning, on the last 50 miles of the 1500 mile trek, the movers rearended another 18 wheeler... and so the "I paid extra for it" car hauler being towed by the moving company truck went flying up a foot or two in the air, and then came crashing back down. You might be wondering what happened to the stuff inside the "I paid extra for it" car hauler. Well... here are a few pics... note the gaps, body lines on the door (which equals a spring suicide door), etc. Did I mention that the front half of the truck was practically straight out of the paint shop after literally years of sheetmetal work?

Re: When you hire the movers based on their car hauling experience...

and a few more...

Now begins the battle over getting them to pay up for the damage. Did I mention my stainless fridge has a huge dent in one of the doors and that my stainless grill had both sides (the wings with the burners) ripped completely off the main unit (and that the door below was also caved in)? I can't wait to start unpacking to find out how many pieces all my dishes, decor, and electronics are in. What fun?

Wow. I don't think I've ever been speechless after reading a thread. If that company is like most out there today, your headache has just begun. I bet you could almost cry. Although at least it's just material stuff, as much as it hurts, it can be replaced. Good luck and hopefully they will do the right thing! Keep us posted.

Wow...very sorry to hear of your misfortune at the hands of a company that doesn't care a thing about your belongings. I'd be livid as I am sure you are. I can only hope you get everything replaced with a minimum of hassle on your end.

Better have the wife hide the guns for a while. Their insurance should cover the damages, not to mention the "day laborer" that probably wasn't covered by them... You should contact a lawyer. Good luck.

Re: When you hire the movers based on their car hauling experience...

Damn that's a bummer!! The same type of thing happend when my parents moved, my dad's 66 Impala covertable was just completly restored, the movers said it would be no problem and if something did it would be covered.

Well, when they unloaded the car the right rear quarter panel was smasshed in and they tryed to cover it with a furniture pad.... then they tryed to say they didn't do it..... long story short, my dad's insurance paid for it and the moving company denied everything. Those moving companies seem like a bunch of punks, they lie to get the business then when something goes wrong they lie some more.....

Hate to see that as well man. Not sure if you could win this over in court but could you also see if they could pay a bodyman to fix the damages for you? Not just for the metal that was messed up?

Re: When you hire the movers based on their car hauling experience...

Shipping vehicles is always a blind bet. IT is espeically bad if doing it as part of a total house move when they put it into a moving van. I have seen a lot worse come out of a van-- that went in perfect like a friends NEW 82 Camaro SS where they just laid straps across the hood and fenders which friction wore the paint right down to the metal. We had a move where our station wagon broke the loading ramp which was NOT made for vehicles--and yea the vehicle dropped down--but only on one side resting on the tail of the truck as the back wheels dropped down. Wound up bending the drive shaft but not enough to be noticeable untill you drove it over 40mph. I didn't realize what happened and couldn't find the cause of the vibration. I traded the wagon in on a new one. Eventually my wife told me what happened months later and I realized what caused the vibration. I moved 5 times within 8 years and every move resulted in something broken with little reinbursement for damage.
Anyway, sorry for the hassle and the damage. Sometimes s#$t happens. As long as you and your family have your health, love and happiness---all else is just not that important. Trust the HUCK here---don't loose sleep over this--be pissed but don't let it weigh you down. You could be living in Iowa next to the Mississippi.
