Autometer Gauges...

I am looking to get some Autometer Ultra lite gauges.

I guess If I am going to do them I would get liquid filled. What would I get? Electrical or mechanical?

I know I want to do a 5" speedo to 160 MPH and a 5" Tach

What small gauges? Electrical or mechanical?

Fuel gauge
Water temp
Tranny Temp
oil pressure
Voltage

part numbers if anyone knows which way I would be wise to go

Autometer gauges are great! I prefer mechanical for the simple reason that I hate the short sweep that electric gauges have. Just my opinion.

Re: Autometer Gauges...

I wouldn't worry about the liquid filled ones, not really needed for a street vehicle.

I like the electrical ones, you can make a harness to easily disconnect them.

For the speedo, I'd get a mechanical speedo if your tranny is mechanical out.

For my 68, I'm using all electrical since doesn't have a mechanical output.

What tranny has a mechanical out? WHat about a turbo 400 or a 700r4? ANy downside to an electrical speedo? where would the pick up go?

where does the tach hook up to? im guessing somewhere off the distributor or something.

Re: Autometer Gauges...

well the original speedo is mechanical, so pretty much a TH 350 and TH400 are mechanical. I know the 700R4 that I had in my 72 was also mechanical, but I think that changed at some point.

If you don't need an electric speedo, I wouldn't get one....they're more expensive.

I think our sending unit is 0-90 ohm, but I'd double check.

Yeah, the tach hooks up to the distributor.

Re: Autometer Gauges...

0-90 Ohm on the fuel gage .... here is a dash I put together with all electric AutoMeter UltraLite II's ... I've never seen the need for fluid filled or full sweeps in a street vehicle either.

Dig that Candy Cane stripped towel.

Think wipers for what the other hole is for. Maybe it don't rain in

HAHAHAHA

I bought a frame as my first truck, so I am looking, learning, and understanding as I go.

So lights and wipers, know of a nice knob for them in billet?

My cluster has holes for Wiper, headlights and choke. That's a 1967 GMC.

Re: Autometer Gauges...

I went full sweep electrical & electric speedo. I love the fact that you can calibrate it with the button on the back & a short drive. Also that you only need to unplug the connector to get the dash out.

Ok passthebuck, how did you fill in the center hole for the smaller guage? You have any pictures of your cluster buildup?

Re: Autometer Gauges...

Passthebuck, second the question on filling the center hole, especially the raised circular bezel part. And what lights did you use for the signal indicators?

Re: Autometer Gauges...

I bought billet switches from yogi's street rods. If I had it to do over I wouldn't use these particular switches because they require additional machine work on the back of the billet dash panel in order to fit.
