Do I need this?

This part sits in the water inlet by the thermostat with three tubes coming out of it. What is it? and Do I need it? (see black arrow)

Looks like a thermal vacuum switch for an EGR valve or some other emissions equipment that you likely don't need. Just unscrew it and plug the hole with an appropriate sized pipe plug.

Its something to do with vacuum and carb for heat reasons. Some kinda switch

Weird, what the heck is it for? Its over the thermostat so it doesn't see any action until the thermostat opens. Someone will know this site is loaded with knowledgeable people.

Just a guess, but looks like it may keep the vacuum advance from operating on the distributor until the engine is up to temperature.

Like said before remove it and plug the hole.
