question about vintage air

got my kit in and was wondering if any one had this problem. the instructions show a pass through hole in the core support. i don't have this. does any one know where the hole should be. don't want to screw this up, there are pre-bent hard lines that go through there.

also, the allen grove brackets that came with the kit aren't even close to fitting over my headers. did any one have this issue.

I don't have any advice to give you but I do want to install a vintage air system into my truck some time in the near future. Could you show pics of your progress. Thanks and good luck.

I saw a post about this earlier, but can't find it now. Sorry. The guy that installed his vintage air wasn't too happy with the quality of the instructions he recieved.

I just installed my Vintage Air system a few weeks ago. I have an AC cab, and got their kit for AC cabs. EVERYTHING was a bolt on, including the Alan Grove brackets. Do you have a non-AC cab? or a replacement core support?

1967 GMC radiator support I have on my truck is the same way. I am going through the same thing right now. I am going to take a Greenlee Punch and make my hole.

TOO BAD I DIDN'T THINK OF THAT. WE HAVE A GREEN LEE (HYDRAULIC) AT WORK. I'M OFF FOR 4 DAYS AND DON'T WON'T TO GO BACK. ARE YOU GOING TO USE THE GREEN LEE TO DO THE 2 1/2" HOLES FOR THE VENTS. I'M RUNNING A NON-AC CAB. AND THE HEADERS WON'T CLEAR THE GROVE BRACKETS. THE NUMBER 1 (DRIVER'S FRONT) AND THE NUMBER 2(PASSENGER FRONT) HEADER TUBES GO OUT AWAY FROM THE BLOCK AND THEN BACK RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE 3RD BOLT HOLE ON EITHER SIDE, PREVENTING THE USE OF THE SPACERS.

There are some dimples in your core support to locate the holes. Its been five years,but I think I pulled the battery box and drilled from engine side with a hole saw. There are also dimples on front side to locate holes for drier bracket holes. Hope this helps. John

HEY, TIM. JUST CURIOUS TO SEE WHAT PROGRESS YOU MAD WITH THE A/C INSTALL. I GOT MY HOLE THROUGH THE CORE SUPPORT. USED A HOLE SAW. CAME OUT GOOD. MY DAD CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF USING A COAT HANGER BENT IN THE SHAPE OF THE HARD LINES FROM THE CONDENSER TO LOCATE WHERE THE WHOLE SHOULD BE.

Hey gmc67swb, That is a Great ideal your Dad has with the coat hanger. I will give it a try. I have not had much time to work on my truck. Since I started selling truck parts I have no free time at all. I am going to finish it the winter if I have to hire someone for the parts bussiness.

I used a hole saw to go through the support. I just bolted the condenser in place and held the lines up and marked the support. I used Zoops brackets for the A/C, Alt and P/S and they worked great.

I just happened to be looking at the factory assembly manual last night in preparation of making my own AC system out of various stock parts. According to the manual there are dimples for EVERY hole you need to drill. The manual even tells you what size the holes were from the factory.

THAT'S PRETTY COOL, BUT I SWEAR THERE WAS NO DIMPLE IN THE AREA WHERE I DRILLED MY CORE SUPPORT. MAYBE THE GMC IS DIFFERENT. THE KIT CAME WITH TEMPLATES FOR THE HOLES IN THE DASH AND I KNOW THERE'S NO DIMPLES THERE.

You're right. There are no dimples in the dash. But the core support has dimples for the "big" hole you run the hard lines through, it has dimples where you drill holes to mount the condensor and receiver/dryer. The kick panel on the passenger side (for the vacuum pot to operate the door) has dimples too.

I'm guessin you aren't quite at this stage in the install yet, but something to think about. My V.A. system calls for you to remove the pass. side kick panel vent door and silicone in a block off "plate" they supply, in order to prevent hot air comming into the cab. I did this, but got to thinking later on that by doing this, it's going to be alot harder to get access to the area behind the kick panel in order to clean out the leaves and other gradoo that tends to accumulate there. I'm not quite sure what the "solution" to this would be, but maybey you could brainstorm a bit. Maybey some way of using a gasket or foam weatherstrip ans an extra sheet metal screw(s)???????? I guess installing a trash guard in the cowl area would minimize the need to clean the kick panel recess out. Anyway, I never thought about this when I was installing my system.
Also I would recommend you bench test the unit like the instructions call for.....I almost skipped this step thinking it unnecessary, but my dealer said he's had 2-3 units in the last 4-5 years that have had problems, and the time to find that out is BEFORE you install it. Like my grandpa said....a million to one odds don't mean anything if you're the one.
