I want one!!!!

I bet this thing is a fricken monster! How cool would it be to slap some "four-two-seven" badges on the sides of one of our trucks.....especially if it looked like a ratty-a$$ beater like mine! Ohhhh, if I could somehow crap a pound of 50's, I'd have one.

Yes my peeps- that be an Aluminum Block and heads! From what I read it uses the same tooling as the orginal ZL-1, which as you know was arguably the most bad-a$$-enest motor to ever come out of Detroit.

Somebody get me a bucket.....I'm starting to drool all over the floor.

Thats a sweet motor --- but you know a 427 is just a stroked 396 right? You could probably build a pretty good one for 3k. (although, not an all aluminum one -- but still enough to justify the crossed flags 427 badges on the sides if u want)


"427" is a symbolic engine size from the mid 60's , much like "426" Hemi, 440, 428, etc. etc. I'll bet that motor is a mean bastard for its size , but Chevy now makes 502's and 572's.

Just a friendly correction here, a 427 is a 'destroked' 454. Take a 454 block and drop a 396 crank in there and 'voila a 427. GM did not bother stroking the 396, the bores were too small to effectively make power and pass emissions standards.

A 427 has a legendary sound to it when you say it though....

This engine is probably not in the same catalog as an LS-7 though because they are just too different. This engine is a cost-no-object dream motor for a high end build, (the type whose owners could care less about efficiency or packaging size).

On the surface, an LS-7 looks like a more practical and logical modern choice, but this motor is for the guy who doesn't even know how to spell practical (but has a wallet full of crisp Benjies)

It may be less powerful then the 502 and 572, but that thing would look real good sitting between the frame rails on my truck. I guess just the '427' script on the valve covers does it for me. I would love a 502 or 572, but a 427 just is a cool historical engine.

Maybe one day the 502 and 572 will enjoy some legend and history but I don't believe they will ever equal the legendary status of the old 427. It was a Hoss.

Yep. I'd say its an overbored 396 since it predates the 454. The 427 and 396 have the same stroke.

So if that is true, how far out would you need to bore to get 427? My 396 has already been bored .060" I never did the math cause I don't know the formula..

It is impossible to bore the 396 enough to make it a 454. You need a 427 or 454 block. When I made the reference to it being an overbored 396, I meant when it first came out it would have been referred to as that because the 454 did not exist in 1966. It shares the bore of the 454 and could also be referred to as a destroked 454. Sorry for the confusion there.

The formula for figuring cubic inches on any engine is Bore X Bore X Stroke X
.7854 X number of cylinders = cubic inches. For instance the the 396 is 4.094 X 4.094 X 3.76 X .7854 X 8 = 395.97 cu in. The 427 is 4.25 X 4.25 X 3.76 X .7854 X 8 = 426.72 cu in.

Your .060" over 396 is now displacing 407.66 cu in. Most would call it a 408 since it rounds up.

I love BBC's but I'm w/you 100% on this one.

A 427 LS over a 427 BBC anyday of the week. Same power, definitely more efficient, & lighter weight for cheaper. The only thing the LS would fall 'short' on is looks (gotta love those big valve covers) . . .... If you're creative, that can be fixed as well.

That and sound. You could do something to make it appear bigger, but you can't the fake the sound of BBC.

I looked at them few months back for my truck..just cant justify putting an aluminium block in a street car (or truck).use aluminium engines in our race cars for weight reasons mainly, with our truck the extra weight advantage is not going to help,as for the looks yes it looks good but i think my engine looks good to, i built it myhself for less and make a hell of alot more power then that crate 427 any day..just my oinion tho..rob

There is bound to be another step in the formula. bore x stroke x 8 cyl doesn't come up to 350. 111.36 What is missing?

I have a 40 over 350 and guess it's about a 358?

Bore X Bore X Stroke X .7854 X number of cylinders = cubic inches.

4.040" X 4.040" X 3.48 X .7854 X 8 = 356.88

They are commonly referred to as 358's though.

From what I've read, GM is releasing a small batch of IDENTICLE COPO Camro 427s like this. Then, when it hit's the list of the other crate-motors, it's a bit changed. Autoblog has a really good article about the engine.

But, LS7's 427 vs this 427?

Enlighten me on the differences in performance. The LS7 is a small block, the old 427 is a big block right?

The 'new' LS7 would be equal to a small block as far as the external dimensions, but it's all high end performance otherwise.

Although both of these 427's are all aluminum, the LS motor is filled w/the latest/greatest technological advancements. The 're-tooled' BBC/427 is just that, re-tooled from the original molds w/some of the late model enhancements (hyd roller cam bosses).

Both have heads that will flow some serious air; but the LS based heads would most likely have better mid/low lift flow capabilities which = more power/less fuel consumption (I would have to research further to be 100% on the flow numbers of each head).

The original LS7 was a 454. Over the counter crate engine only, or maybe COPO.

Depends on what you call technological advancements I guess.
The new LS engines use disposable technology as far as I'm concerned. Rods that can't be rebuilt, blocks that can't be bored....
They do run good, but ya better get it while it new, cause it scap iron after the first time..
