What is missing from this picture?
Like the title says, what is missing?
And the correct answer is my water pump pulley and fan belts.... The other night I installed my new Grant steering wheel and started installing my electric fan. I got the fan mounted up and I pulled off the flex fan and spacer. I only had 2 bolts that would fit the water pump pulley and I figured it would be fine until the parts store opened in the morning. Well I had to give the new steering wheel a try, and I wanted to see if you could feel the 15-20 hp you supposedly free up by getting rid of the fan. Well I took it for a cruise with a few 5k shifts and brought it home with no problems. The next day I go to run to the store and I start hearing a squeely noise like when a throw out bearing seizes up. So I start playing with my clutch, then there is a bang and my fan belts shoot up in the air (I took off my hood the day before so I could paint my hinges and the underside of the hood). So I pull over to inspect the damage and like I figured the pulley has sheared off and all I have left of it is 2 little chunks of metal held on by the bolts. You know that you live in a small town when your truck breaks down and your wife's sister just happens to be right behind you! So I told her I'd be fine, but thanks for stopping. So I grabbed my belts out of the street and headed home with no power steering, alternator, or water pump; good thing it was only about 2 miles. I ran it up to about 65 MPH, shut it down and coasted as far as I could, then repeated until I got home. I'm just glad that there was no other damage done, it could have easily taken out my radiator, windshield, or hit another car. So at least it was only a $30 lesson that there is a reason why there are 4 bolt holes in water pump pulley

Them Chevy trucks! I remember when I drove home on only two lug nuts. Kinda hard when you have to divide them between four wheels.
Seriously though...It reminds me of the M.A.S.H. episode about the chopper pilot that was evacuating a wounded solder and broke a cooling belt. He'd fly for two minutes and land to let'er cool for 45. |
