arm rests - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm in the process of designing door panels for my grandson 68, my question is has anyone made their own arm rests. Photos or ideas would be appreciated.

I am afraid I can not supply any photos becuase I have not gotten to this part of my build, but I have been contimplating making my interior door handles/armrests out of wood. I'm no master carpenter, but I think I can successfully cut some redoak and glue them (laminate) together to replicate the foam ones that came in so many of our trucks.

I also hope to add wood to the lower door, replace the upper door panels with wood, cover the glove box, and even the gage cluster (if my wood working skills improve enough by then). i have even considered whittling out a dash pad out of wood, but I get a headache when I think about that! LOL These ideas all stemmed from the wood bed that I fabricated and installed.

I have also toyed with the idea of using "grab handles" for arm rests too. Do a web image search for "grab handles" and you see why this seems like simple mod.

I used these 1950's vintage Chevy truck arm rests on my Burban. Straight up bolt on no modifications were necessary.

I like the 50's style also.....search custom interiors. I have seen some door panels with arm rests built from Mdf or plywood, then covered with foam and leather or vinyl. Pretty much design, fab up your own, make it fit the build. Post some photo's.

Thanks for all the reply's, lot of information out there. So I mocked upped one laminating 3 pieces of 1" MDf it turned out pretty good the problem I see is putting the 2 vinyls on, I'm not a seamstress

so I may have go back to the drawing board. I could take it to upholstery shop but that defeats the whole purpose, that and I'm cheap. I may paint them I'll see what my grandson says. Once again thanks for the
help.

An awl, or punch and some heavy nylon thread. Don't be skeert of it.
