Exclamation Help!! Bearing in steering column needs replaced!!!!

I am i dire need of someone to show me pictures and a somewhat easy to follow set of directions to show me how this is done, im buying a new pickup (80 chevy 4x4 3/4 ton) and dad said that before he insures it and i can start driving it, that column needs to be fixed so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The problem with the column is that the bearing in the top portion of the column(its a tilt column)is totally shot and the steering wheel can be picked up and moved around a some in the column.

Thanks,
Dayne

This probably isn't the answer you're looking for, but I would replace the column. You should be able to find one for $100 or so.

Hi Dayne,

Took a snapshot of the column breakdown from a service manual I have. Might help to understand what comes off and where the bearing is. Kept the photo in HUGE format, so you could see the details.

So far, that's the best one. Not sure how your browser is showing it, but it's a HUGE photo. Opened or displayed at normal size, it shows all the details.

I've put two more together. One of the same shot, and a different illustration from the same manual.

Hope those help.

Re: Help!! Bearing in steering column needs replaced!!!!

Yo! BREIT1!
Here's a link to my upper column re-assembly pictorial,...it'll give you some great pics of the upper column parts. Removal is the reverse procedure.
Turn signal switch is removed by removal of the screw at the base of the lever and the three that secure the switch through the white plastic, unplugging the wiring at the base of the steering column (just below the dash), and pulling the wires and plug up through the channel on the underside of the steering column (after loosening the channel,...it doesn't have to be removed). Now you're right on top of that bearing.
Hope THIS helps!
Todd.
