So Im picking through the local yard the other day...

...and I came accross this LWB 71/72. When I asked what he would take for the tilt column, he told me thats his personal vehicle. And would only let it go as a complete truck as is for $3500. No, its buried in the middle of the yard with 100+ cars packed around it like sardines. I was barely about to get around it....it was so tightly packed.

He tells me its a factory AC/402BBC/TH400. So I look it over, no SPID, one fender has the 400 badge on it, the other doesnt have any badging, the metal bed was so dented and ate up I would be scared to put my range bag in there.

The interior was even more ate up, seat was torn to bits. There was 50 carbs and other varies parts thrown around in there, and a converter leaking all over the passenger side foot well. AC vents were under the dash, so Im thinking its not factory. And the small hump....which I know a TH400 wont fit under.

Under the hood....no valve covers, no carb, full of leaves and other debris, the factory AC looked like a late model mini-compressor with brackets made out of angle iron and carefully bent re-bar.

Theres no point to this thread.....I just wanted to let y'all know about the gem I found.

Chances are - every time you go back - it will be in the same spot - doing nothing but collecting dust...

Slammed70...sadly this is all to common.
I think this is the Barret Jackson effect. If this is his "personal" vehicle I would like to see his non-personal vehicle. ... This truck will go back to rust and dust before its all said and done. As you saw...no factory ac, no 400 tranny, and who knows what else isn't factory. Another guy that is dreams and has no clue to what he is talking about..

A 83' th400 will fit under a low hump, I have one.

Sorry to hijack thread: Just curious, new to chevy trucks and didn't know there were different humps. Anyone care to explain the differences? Pics would be nice. Just for my FYI, now that I know a Turbo 400 will fit either.

I have a Buick housing t400 with a non hump floor and it still has plenty of clearence.

The people at LMC told me the 400 wouldnt fit under a small hump when I inquired about carpet.

Wrecking yard people all too often translate the "part out" price of all the individual pieces into what the truck is worth.

I have a 67 C10 with the factory 327 and factory TH400 with the small hump. The glove box build sheet verifies the tranny is correct. I think its the combination of the factory big block (not offered in 67) and TH400 that drives the need for the big tunnel hump

from what I understand, big or small hump the TH400 will work, just depends if you really need that 2nd heater in the cab

There is a 67-68 (never got close enough to check the year) c20 in a yard by me and it's the same way. Thats the owners he bought it from his grandpas estate sale and is holding on to if for memories....? wtf? memories just letting rot in the the yard then he says ya we need to get it started up one of these days to keep the engine from locking up but thats all we will do to it. If it were a swb I would steel it

You mean LMC actually attempted to offer tech advise?Ask about an MG and they might get it right.The only thing they know about these trucks is there are alot of people buying parts for them.
Tell the junkyard owner You can`t stand tilt wheels.You`ll give him $3,500 if he swaps-in a standard column.You`ll be back in a few days.Then,have a buddy go offer him $25.00 for the tilt.I can see him diving in there and yanking that column for $25 like he was making $1,000 off of it.Then,don`t show up for the truck.

theres a guy that lives a block way from me and has a late 69 Short bed step side chevy he's an older guy retired age and told me some day he is going to fix it up .

I've got a 70 SWB with 72 BB air cab, rebuilt 350, duals, excellent Arkansas body, 308 5 lug posi rear, PS, PB, 6lug front, Cowl hood, high hump floor as the cab was originally a big block---it's in prime and when someone asks me how much, I tell them "I am in the process of restoring it"!!! Now if someone actually put $3500. in front of me, I would help them load it !!!!!!!!!!!
The lesson here is that if you see something you are seriously interested in,
Money$$$ talks and BS walks!!! Pull out a hand full of $$$ and see what he does. hehehehehehe

I think the point that Huck was making was if you had cash in hand and offered him $XXX amount for the column, he may have taken it.

The TH400 will fit under a small hump cab, I have personally parted 2 lwb big block trucks that were low hump cabs. I have never seen a legitimate bb Swb truck that was a low hump cab, but I know for a fact that they did do it with some of the LWB trucks and one of them was even a factory bucket seat truck with the low hump- this is definately a no-no with a SWB bucket seat truck w/ bb.
