Finally, a rim
Well finally, after 2 trips leaving empty handed i scored....... 1 6lug truck rally from the junkyard. I decided to go and get one of those manual tire "machines"...... You know harbor freight style. To break down the tire, and get the money they MADE me pay for the bald ass tire that i slashed, but it was tubed. Damn those thing are alot of work to use. Any suggestions of what to paint this with?
Edit. Still looking for 3 more, if anyone knows of any for cheap in or around Edmonton. Last edited by Mister laugh; 04-26-2008 at 05:03 AM. |

Re: Finally, a rim
I had a set of ralleys for my '71 Chevelle sand blasted. Over the bare steel I used PPG Epoxy primer then some DuPont single stage metalic silver I had left over from another job.

Re: Finally, a rim
I would consider having them sandblasted and powder coated. I did this with the wheels on my 59 GMC. Cost me about $200 for 5 wheels, and that was done in Wetaskiwin.
Have you looked in the bargain finder? www.buysell.com and click on Edmonton. They are usually a couple of sets in there. Or try the 39th Annual Red Deer Swap Meet Friday May 2nd 2008 - 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm Saturday May 3rd 2008 -8:00 am to 4:00 pm Westerner Park 4847A 19th Street Red Deer, Alberta Three Arenas, over 500 indoor stalls, 60 outdoor, featuring vendors from all four western provinces. Are you set on a used set? I did the math and ended up buying a reproduction set off eBay. When I was shopping to was $100 for 4 bare rims or $200 if they had rings and caps. Then they still needed paint. For $400 I had a set of reproduction Vette Rally (in 6 bolt, 15X8) rims mailed to Fort Smith NT. Something to consider.

Re: Finally, a rim
I wouldn't powdercoat them.
Once the tires get put on, the rim will be scratched all to hell, then within a year or two, the powder will lift and flake. Look at the frame on a big rig, you'll see what I'm talking about. I say just get a good paint job on them. |

Andy I have not heard that. I powdercoated my wheels on my 59 GMC back in 2003 and they still look like new. Of course this truck would not be a great measure as it is barely driven and never in winter. I did also help a buddy do a set on his Toyota truck and this is his only vehicle. 5 years now, daily driven and they still look good.

Re: Finally, a rim
Before you spend to much time on that rim, take it to a tire shop and have them spin it up to see if it is straight. I got a pair of rims all derusted, cleaned and painted, tires mounted, and one is bent slightly, will run for a while, but needs to be replaced, wish I would have known and could have got my money back and saved the effort of painting it.

Re: Finally, a rim
just wondering why all the effort of taking the tire off? why not just take it to a tire shop most would only charge a couple buck, and on that note have you checked out the tires shops? they might have those rims kicking around.
