How Many Horns on the Beast??

Did 1971 pickups only have 1 horn from the factory?
Can we still buy another horn for these trucks?

Re: How Many Horns on the Beast??

Get the four-note horn set off eBay for a Cadillac (search for '4 note cadillac horn') and install that, sounds like a train. Not as loud, because it's still just electric horns, but 4X as loud as stock and looks stock.

Otherwise, my 1970 had two horns from the factory.

I just ordered a set from eBay. Guess we'll see how loud that are. On YouTube they sound cool

I think by 71 they all had a high and a low. For sure the higher trim level trucks did.

Re: How Many Horns on the Beast??

I believe 2 horns became available sometime during the 1969 model year. My '69 CST built in late 1968 doesn't even have the mounting provision for a high note horn on the core support near the left headlight. I thought the high note horn was then a standalone option. However, I don't see any evidence of that on the GM Heritage Center website. That website does show "dual horns" as part of the 1971 Cheyenne and Cheyenne Super packages. Therefore, it may be that the horn was added only to the high trim level trim packages later in 1969, 1970 or 1971. Could GMCs have been different?

Re: How Many Horns on the Beast??

My 71 GMC Custom only has one and no provision on core for second horn. I do have a set of high/low from a 69 C20 that was listed on spid, the connection wire for the pair is quite short compared to other I have seen.....

I replaced mine with the Hella twin air horns right behind the grill.

Re: How Many Horns on the Beast??

My 67 Suburban has dual horns. I never thought about it except when I was reinstalling my steering wheel. Maybe because it was built in California they felt it required more horns.

Standard = 1
DeLuxe* = 2

*By De Luxe, I mean any upgrade trim level, ''Custom'', ''CST'', ''Cheyenne'' etc.

I don't believe that is true until sometime during, or after, the 1969 model year. As I mentioned in post 7, my '69 CST did not even have the provision near the left headlight for the second (high note) horn. By provision, I mean a hole with a square nut welded to the side toward the left headlight bucket along with a smaller hole above it for the small tab on the horn bracket to keep the horn from rotating. I am 100% sure my core support, which I have since replaced with a later one, was original. I had to drill a hole when I added a high note horn.

Duh... that's pretty much true of all of us!
I'm really curious to find if anyone has an original 2nd horn in 1969 or before.

Where in ARIZ are you located?

Oh yeah. My '67 K/10 Suburban had dual [hi-lo] horns. I think only the lower notes blew, though.
I messed with it recently. The one-horn in my '68 C/10 Stepside burned out [after only 49 years!]. I tried to recycle the Sub's horns but they were both dead too, since that truck has been sitting. I had a '70s Mercedes Benz horn, I acquired somewhere a long time ago. I used one of the Suburban horn brackets to mount the MBZ horn -- after a 3/8'' hole and a 90* bend-- in lieu of the OEM one-note. It sounds annoyingly loud and high-pitched. But it works, until I get something better.

Re: How Many Horns on the Beast??

Yes, standard was one and deluxe gave hi/lo. I love the old Cadillac sound and want that for mine. Mine has an accessory train horn that doesn't work. That Cadillac sound I associate with luxury, yet the sounds says "You better move!".

I always wanted to hook up a series of a mixture of horns from beep beeps to big honker. Like the sound you associate with traffic jambs on TV. Someone cuts you off, you lay on the horn, and the person at fault won't know who to flip the bird to because it would seem they pissed everybody off! When it's just you and them it's a 50/50 situation. When everyone is honking at that person they'd have to admit they were wrong!

Re: How Many Horns on the Beast??

My 69 came with three horns. I cannot tell you what kind they are? The truck was loaded with lots of options but horns were not on the spid.

Re: How Many Horns on the Beast??

Pretty sure it was OEM, but then the PO put in a 454/TH350/NP205 in a factory 283/SM420/T221 truck, so who knows what was original. I'll check the SPID tomorrow.

Re: How Many Horns on the Beast??

This is timely as I was just noticing my 72 Cheyenne has only one horn, but it does have a pigtail for a second one. Can't tell where it was, though. The wire is long enough that I could find a spot to put a replacement for the one that's missing. The horn that's still there is on the back (engine) side of the core support, not on the front by the headlight as in the pic posted above.

The horns pictured in post 16 are not originals nor is their location. The standard horn (low note) was on the engine side of the core support just to the left (driver side) of the radiator. The second horn (high note) was bolted to the engine side of the core support just below the left headlight. They were connected by a green jumper wire. I couldn't decide which picture was best, so here are 3.

Here are pictures of correct horns and the jumper wire. The high note horn on the left has a "H". I've never seen a low note with a "L".

Re: How Many Horns on the Beast??

I went and just pulled the cover off of my 69 and snapped some pics. I was wrong it came with four horns. Truck has the auxillery battery option.

A closer pic of the front three.

Musta been a real road rager.
