I've got Flowmaster 40's straight out the back on a LWB with a 305. I love the deep sound, of course, but, just like a stereo, I always want more. What else can I do (if anything) to make it sounds more better, aside from making engine changes?

Definately bigger tips! Some 3 1/2" x 18" tips or so should sound great!

I've got these on my 69 and I LOVE the way they sound!!!. Better even than my 454 Elky with its H-pipe crossover.

You don't say whether you have headers or not. If you don't, they'll make a big difference in the sound. It will sound more like a performance engine and get rid of the softness generated by the restrictive manifolds.

Not an inexpensive change if you don't have them...but probably worth it for what you're trying to do.

The tailpipes also make it a lot quieter, if you dump the mufflers it will be a lot louder. You need a turn down on the muffler...a 4 - 6" long 45 degree exhaust bend and a clamp is all you need. Basically you don't want the exhaust blowing on the rear end.

I second Ozona, cut those tail pipes and go with turn downs past the muffler. It'll be loud.

Tips make a big difference. I have 3 1/2 X 18" dual silvertone stainless tips ($115) with 40 series Flowmasters. The sound is awesome. Also a more free flowing air filter will make some difference. If you want more radical go with glass packs or cherry bombs and it will be alot louder than the 40 series.

Not running headers, but I will certainly look to do that. Anything would be an improvement on the look of my nasty rams horns. And I like the idea of turning them out. I would like to remove the humongous back bumper, and having the pipes sticking out there a foot or so would be ridiculous looking, obviously. Dizzy -- I'm not sure on the pipe size, but would guess it's less than 3 (I have no clue about what sizes the pipe comes in).

I dumped my exhaust just after the mufflers about 1 1/2 foot past the cab under the bed. Its REALLY loud and sounds great ..... sets off car alarms and all ... my neighbors hate it

If you want more sound, slice off the tailpipes, right behind the mufflers, and don't even use turndowns....just keep 2" or so of pipe right off the back of the muffler, like nothing was ever welded on. I have 40 series Flowmasters on my truck, with 2.5" pipes and this setup. It is really loud, deep, and throaty. The front of my rearend is covered with soot though, and it creates a lot of resonance. But it does sound pretty darn good. I had turndowns on it for a long time and it was a lot quieter.

Like mentioned above, get the 3 1/2" x 18", or maybe even 24" exhaust tips. Made a big difference on my GMC, she barks more now with the big tip and glass-pack.

an x-pipe or h-pipe will help performance somewhat but will acutually quiet down the sound, but if you want it loud just run 3in pipe from some long tube headers about 2-3ft of it into like 12-16in cherrybombs or single chamber flowmasters and dump them at a 54* or so just enough to point the exhaust away from the truck and at the ground, with that youll be setting of house alarms to aswell as car alarms and pissin off everybody

ive got what looks like 2-2 1/4in pipe from the ramhorns for about 2-3ft into 26in glasspacks that sit right under the cab inline with the door and dumpout with a 45* bend tip pointing sideways away from the truck and a bit down and its got some noise to it, pisses off my buddys neighbors all the time, its true duals with no crossover and stock 350

Guess my opinion is contrary to most- I like the muscle sound but not all-out load.
I run headers with 3" tubes, Flowmaster 40s and 3" pipe all the way out the back. No Tips, especially downturns, which throw up huge dust clouds if you get off the pavement.
Nothing else sounds like this setup with a bib block.
One thing to think about with the short dumps or the side dumps- the smell and the sound in the cab aren't much fun after an hour or so, and the way it will sound when passing any buildings is terrible- since you only hear one engine side of the exhaust or the other it sounds like the engine is missing badly.

IT does sound like it's missing badly! I've had that experience with my cherries. NO cross pipe. NO turn down. Just a 45 angle out to the side

The setup I have on my truck defenitly does kick up some dust, and there is a lot of resonance in the cab. However, it sounds really, really good IMO. Deep and throaty. It would probably get annoying for a daily driver. I haven't daily drove my truck for a few years and when I did I had this exhaust setup from when I was 17 to 19 or so. Here is a video of it on YouTube. Excuse the early shifts, but I had to leave it in drive to hold the camera down.

have you thought about an electric exhaust cutout?? sound nasty as long as you want then close them back whenever you get a headache/noise violation ticket... whichever comes first

I have headers/30" glasspacks straight out the back with 3 1/2" x 18" tips. I've cruised along side of cops without any problems, so my exhaust must not be loud enough. I think I need shorter glasspacks.

I would definiteley cut off tailpipes in front of rear end and add some big chrome tips, like the big wazoos, sure will hear the difference from a block away!!
