steering column?
i have a 66 gmc and first gear and reverse are not working. im thinking the issue is the steering column because a few days ago i had the same issue. i went under the truck and popped it into first manually. i was trying the same today but cant get it to go in gear. a friend suggested that some fork in the steering column may be broken. does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, i looked under the truck and i think im leaking tranny oil, but cant find a dipstick for it. wtf |

Re: steering column?
manual trans dont have dipsticks, should be a fill plug on one side only. also the linkage at the column used to stick on me when I had my 3speed, I had to use a screwdriver to pry them apart. check that, hope it helps.

Re: steering column?
thanks for the reply clyde65. i dont think its the linkages at the steering column. they have plenty of space. a friend told me his 51 used to do the same thing and he had some old mechanic repair his. i think i might just have to replace the steering column. i dont think ill know what im looking at if i take it apart.
