Posi question?

I am thinking about purchasing this posi unit. I noticed from the pictures the springs on the left have more coils than the ones on the right which was confirmed by the seller is this normal or is there mismatched springs in this posi unit?

Re: Posi question?

I am no expert but i believe i read somewhere that different sprinfs are used to set the prreload. I have balked at buying used posi units. In my case the asking price was too close to the price of a new one. I have read that the oem cases with two windows are weaker and usually are already cracked. Aftermarket have one window.

Re: Posi question?

Thanks Wideside for your help I never knew that about the springs. I would have never guessed that.

The springs on all four corners should be the same length. A rebuild kit with new springs and clutch plates is about $85 and a new unit will be close to $400.00 so you choose, but somebody has been in that unit and it is not correct if the springs are not identical. Spring kits come in three spring pressures, 200 Lb, 400lb and 800 lb. Mixing springs will cause asymmetric and unusually high wear causing the unit to fail or possibly just come apart under load which will likely destroy the ring and pinion.
You can get new preload plates and springs from:

See above comment about steering clear of used posi units!

Re: Posi question?

Gentlemen,

That was my old posi unit that came out of my burb, it was fine when I pulled it. I took it apart and cleaned it up for shipping. Did I put it back together the way I took it apart, probably not....... Everything looked fine when it was taken down. But it is a used part and I havent had in my hands for a long time. I can tell you when it was in the burb, it was ok. Had 3.73 gears on it, my burb is in rebuild mode so I was not able to take it out on the highway and see if there was any problems, but for short trips a few miles, it was fine.

A new spring and clutch kit is just cheap insurance, not an accusation.

No problem,
Not taking it as one. I dont own it anymore, but it did come out of my burb and just wanted the potential buyer to see that it was a good used part from when I had it.
