Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
I am in the midst of changing my '70 to power disc brakes and it seems that the power brake booster will not mount against my firewall because my shift linkage on my steering column is in the way. I am using (or trying to) a brake booster from my parts truck, an 84 gmc half ton. Those of you that have a power booster on your automatic half tons, what did you do about this problem? Did you find a booster that fits? Thanks in advance.

Re: Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
67-72 boosters mount on a bracket away from the firewall.

Re: Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
well my brake booster from the 84 also has a bracket thats about 3.5" deep. so the booster is about 3.5" away from the firewall if/when properly mounted. but still the bottom of the booster hits the shifter linkage when its in 'park'

Re: Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
the right parts... meaning a different (and smaller) brake booster? I found an old thread about a guy who cut a small slit into the metal piece which the rod connects to, and then he just bent that piece a little bit out of the way.

Re: Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
Maybe this will help. My 69 came with a booster. Plenty of clearence. Sounds like you don't have a right set up.

Re: Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
Or, you may be able to use the Lokar universal kit like in this picture. I swapped mine over to it before going with a cable shifter. I liked the lokar rod much better; you can easilly adjust it so that your column indicator lines up perfectly and make it either firmer or softer switching between gears. Mostly, its a lot less bulky and might clear your booster.

My 70 has that same bracket...the later model brackets won't work.

Re: Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
Guess I shoulda said 'without mods'. I suppose most any bracket can be made to work. I do like the look of a master cylinder that isn't at an angle like the stock bracket.

Re: Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
Think this is what you are looking for.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=238199 I know there are some threads that show cutting and welding the bracket to get it to fit, but couldn't find it.

Re: Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
I still think I will attempt it. I want shorten my steering column anyway for alittle more room, then I'll see if it will still work or not and post my results.

Re: Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
The 67-72's have a bellcrank that the pedal pushes on then the bellcrank rod pushes the booster/mc. the mod where you trim the bracket corner is for 3/4 tons. In my opinion on a 1/2 ton you would be better off getting the settup off a 67-72 half ton.

Besides, I already have a brand new booster for a '73-'87. No sense on spending money twice. Agreed.

How about a hydroboost?

Re: Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
I think there too bulky. Plus all the extra lines that need to be run to the PS pump.
I'm convinced myself to go with a powermaster. s/t

Re: Auto shift linkage in way of power brake booster
I'm with Larry in that I was just thinking of hydroboost as an alternative in this situation but I realize the OP already has a unit he wishes to use. I believe there are only two hydro lines to run from the power steering pump to the hydroboost. They work very well and are a smaller diameter package than the conventional vacumn boosters. More clearance for a big block.
If the OP is set on using the 73 up assembly he may be able to heat and bend the shifting linkage to gain some clearance. Or trade his unit for the corrrect one for his truck.
