Anyone know how to identify the size of an Inline 6cyl ???

Is the cubic inches stamped on the block somewhere ??

If so... are they all marked in the same place??,

Or...are different years in different places??.

My neighbor said his is an '84,

What was the last year Inline 6 was used in our trucks??

Lots of questions. I will await your expert opinions as I ponder this dilema.

Thanx Guys

there was i think three made 230,250,292 i would probably assume its a 292 for that year. The engine number loaction is by either the distributor pad passenger side or on the drivers side by the bel housing of the tranny about in the middle. srry i cant give you exact location but look there.

I'm not sure what year it ended but my '84 had a 250 and 3 on the tree.

If the motor mounts are off set, it's a 292, if they are parallel it will be a 250.

Last year the inline6 was offered in our trucks ( 1/2T ) was '85 when the Vortec V6 was introduced. They still sold them up until 1992 in other trucks. 73-87's inlines were only offered in 250 and 292 sizes. The 292 was used by 4x4's and 3/4T up. The fuel pump on a 292 is on the pass side in the middle of the block, it is located at the front on a 250. What Dubie said is the other way to identify one... If the truck is a '84 1/2T, it is a 250.

Thumbs up

I was going to ask the same question till I went to advanced auto for an air filter and the 292 filter was much taller than the 250 (mine). Now, given that everything is still OEM. If I'm wrong, I apologize.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the 292 only produced until the early to mid 70's?

99% of the 73-87 trucks I see that are equipped with inline sixes were of the 250 CI variety.

Nope, they still produce them now, just not in production. They were last availible in 1992. I call about the price of one, the local dealer had one in stock.

If the 292 was avalible until 92, does that mean it was TBI?

But I mean, when was the last year you could actually get one in a 73-87 from the factory...I have NEVER seen a factory 292 equipped 73-87 that was newer than like 76 or so.
